OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Siete de Oros, who came within a head of pulling off a 41-1 upset in the Jerome Stakes here on Jan. 5, will return to Aqueduct for Saturday’s Grade 3, $200,000 Withers Stakes, where he hopes to validate that performance and jump on the Triple Crown trail.

Siete de Oros, owned and trained by Ramon Preciado, is one of seven horses expected to be entered Wednesday for Saturday’s Withers, a 1 1/16-mile race that offers 17 qualifying points (10-4-2-1) for the Kentucky Derby.

Gulfstream Park: Holy Bull top two to skip Fountain of Youth and await Florida Derby

Barbara D. Livingston
Itsmyluckyday (left) came out of this upset victory over Shanghai Bobby "110 percent," said trainer Eddie Plesa Jr.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The Grade 2 Fountain of Youth is one of the most important prep races on the Kentucky Derby trail, and this winter it is a second-tier race worth 50 points to the winner in the new system used to determine eligibility for this year’s Derby field.

But barring some late changes of heart, it would appear the four major players from last Saturday’s program could all wind up bypassing the Fountain of Youth on Feb. 23, including Itsmyluckyday and Shanghai Bobby, the first- and second-place finishers in the Grade 3 Holy Bull.

Tampa Bay: Purple Egg almost ready to resume training

Tom Keyser
Purple Egg hasn't raced since winning the Inaugural at Tampa Bay Downs last Dec. 1.

OLDSMAR, Fla. – The barn of trainer Jane Cibelli continued on a hot streak last week, winning four more races, but the excitement of those victories was tempered a bit because the “big horse” in the barn, undefeated 3-year-old Purple Egg, has been sidelined since winning for the third time in the Inaugural Stakes on Dec. 1, opening day at Tampa Bay Downs.

This victory last March in the Challenger Stakes sent Fort Larned on his way to eventually winning the Breeders' Cup Classic.

TAMPA BAY, Fla. - There were no klieg lights or microphones around the winner’s circle last Wednesday like there were after Fort Larned won the Breeders’ Cup Classic last November, but his trainer, Ian Wilkes, was still smiling broadly when he posed for victory pictures three times, with Carolina Cruisin, Forever Vow, and Nicklaus Way.

Gulfstream Park: Premier Steps moves forward in second U.S. start to capture Sweetest Chant

Premier Steps emerges between horses under Javier Castellano to get up by a neck in the Sweetest Chant.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. --   Trainer Chad Brown predicted Premier Steps would improve off her disappointing U.S. debut when he ran her back in Sunday’s $100,000 Sweetest Chant at Gulfstream Park. And sure enough, Brown was right.

Rallying from perfect position off the pace of Discreet Marq, Premier Steps wore down the game leader in the final strides to register a neck decision in the one-mile Sweetest Chant. Caroline Thomas rallied belatedly outside the top pair to finish another neck farther back in third.
