Infrattini, a 5-year-old gelding owned by the Z Thoroughbreds LLC of Mike Zlaket, has won his last four starts, the most recent being the Jan. 19 Louisiana Handicap over the highly regarded Mark Valeski.

Dominguez released from rehabilitation center, discusses his future plans

Barbara D. Livingston
Ramon Dominguez was released from the Burke Rehabilitation Hospital on Wednesday morning.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Ramon Dominguez talked slowly and thoughtfully, the way he often does when answering questions. He spoke quietly, respectfully, and occasionally wittily.

Only this time, he wasn’t talking about his trip on a horse following a race, or about the accomplishments of another fabulous year that ended with an Eclipse Award.

He was talking about his health – literally his state of mind – and his desire to get healthy and ultimately back to doing what he does so well: riding race horses.

Kentucky Derby Future Wager: Pletcher, Baffert have 11 of the 23 individual interests

Barbara D. Livingston
Todd Pletcher trains the two lowest-priced individual betting interests, Violence (above) and Shanghai Bobby. Both are 12-1 on the morning line.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Todd Pletcher might not have the winner of the 139th Derby on May 4 at Churchill Downs, and Bob Baffert might not either. But between them, they have 11 of the 23 separately listed interests in Pool 1 of the 2013 Kentucky Derby Future Wager, a development that seems to bode well for both.

West Virginia stewards ban former Charles Town racing secretary for two years

West Virginia stewards have revoked the license of the former racing secretary at Charles Town Races for two years because he accepted a loan from two trainers that own and race horses at the track, according to a copy of the stewards’ ruling.

The ruling states that the former racing secretary, Randy Wehrman, solicited a $700 loan from trainer John McKee “on or about Nov. 16,” 2012. When McKee was unable to provide a check to Wehrman immediately, he contacted his “significant other,” the trainer Cynthia O’Bannon, who wrote a check to Wehrman for the amount.

Oaklawn Park: Big Lute will be pointed to Rebel Stakes

Big Lute, a dominant debut winner of a maiden special weight sprint at Oaklawn last Friday, could make his stakes debut in the Grade 2, $600,000 Rebel, trainer Steve Hobby said on Tuesday. The mile and a sixteenth race for 3-year-olds is March 16 at Oaklawn.

“The ideal situation would be to give him experience going two turns one time [in an allowance], then go into the Rebel,” said Hobby. “That would be the best-case scenario.”

Fair Grounds: Believe You Can gets year off to solid start

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Larry Jones confirmed Tuesday that the New Orleans Ladies on March 9 is the probable next stop for Believe You Can.

Believe You Can had a sharp 1 1/16-mile workout Saturday afternoon that paid her connections $60,000. Another name for the event was the Tiffany Lass Stakes, but Believe You Can so overmatched her four foes – she won by 10 1/2 lengths while geared down the final half-furlong – that the race might as well have been a work.

But even an easy race like the Tiffany Lass is worth considerably more than even the fastest work, and Believe You Can’s first start since June should help move her forward into the heart of her early-season campaign.

Lynn Roberts/Hodges Photography
Lecomte winner Oxbow, who is on the Triple Crown trail, will race under a Calumet Farm stable name in his next start.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Owner-breeder Brad Kelley will now race as Calumet Farm, rather than Bluegrass Hall, in a change that goes into effect on Thursday when his Wine Glow starts in the seventh race at Oaklawn Park. Kelley leases and operates Calumet Farm, the historic Lexington, Ky., nursery that bred and raced Triple Crown winners Citation and Whirlaway.

“Every horse that was Bluegrass Hall now [races as] Calumet Farm,” said D. Wayne Lukas, the primary trainer for Kelley.
