Turf Paradise: Tuesday racing canceled, but card will be moved to Thursday

Turf Paradise in Phoenix was forced to cancel a fourth straight live card Tuesday as the main track and turf course remained unsuitable for racing after record rains pelted the area over the past few days.

According to track general manager Vince Francia, the track received permission from the Arizona Racing Commission to take Tuesday’s card and move it in its entirety to Thursday, normally a dark day.

The track will take its normal dark day Wednsday and pick up Thursday with 12:30 p.m. first post.

Aqueduct: Ruler On Ice starts over in Wednesday feature

Tom Keyser
Ruler On Ice has gone winless in nine starts since his 2011 Belmont Stakes victory.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – After a disappointing 4-year-old season compromised by physical issues, 2011 Belmont Stakes winner Ruler On Ice looks to jump-start his career when he makes his 5-year-old debut in a third-level allowance race Wednesday at Aqueduct.

The one-mile race drew a field of six, though Kelly Breen, the trainer of Ruler On Ice, said he will most likely scratch the other half of his entry, Nacho Business.

Wednesday’s nine-race card at Aqueduct also features a pick-six carryover of $31,203, starting with race 4. Ruler On Ice runs in race 3.

Gulfstream Park: Little Mike has easy work

Barbara D. Livingston
Little Mike, with Faustino Aguilar riding, gets in some work over the Gulfstream turf Sunday.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Breeders’ Cup Turf winner Little Mike had his first grass work of the winter on Sunday, going a very easy five furlongs in 1:01.31 over the firm Gulfstream Park turf course.

“I wanted to let him run a little bit for the first time since he’s come back, so I put him on the grass, and I was real pleased with him,” said trainer Dale Romans. “He’s started looking like his old self, and it’s time to try squeezing the lemon a little bit with him, although all his works will not be on the turf.”

Vyjack (left), under Cornelio Velasquez, grinds out a head victory over 41-1- longshot Siete de Oros in the Jerome for 3-year-olds.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Siete de Oros, who came within a head of pulling off a 41-1 upset in the Jerome Stakes here on Jan. 5, will return to Aqueduct for Saturday’s Grade 3, $200,000 Withers Stakes, where he hopes to validate that performance and jump on the Triple Crown trail.

Gulfstream Park: Holy Bull top two to skip Fountain of Youth and await Florida Derby

Barbara D. Livingston
Itsmyluckyday (left) came out of this upset victory over Shanghai Bobby "110 percent," said trainer Eddie Plesa Jr.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The Grade 2 Fountain of Youth is one of the most important prep races on the Kentucky Derby trail, and this winter it is a second-tier race worth 50 points to the winner in the new system used to determine eligibility for this year’s Derby field.

But barring some late changes of heart, it would appear the four major players from last Saturday’s program could all wind up bypassing the Fountain of Youth on Feb. 23, including Itsmyluckyday and Shanghai Bobby, the first- and second-place finishers in the Grade 3 Holy Bull.

OLDSMAR, Fla. – The barn of trainer Jane Cibelli continued on a hot streak last week, winning four more races, but the excitement of those victories was tempered a bit because the “big horse” in the barn, undefeated 3-year-old Purple Egg, has been sidelined since winning for the third time in the Inaugural Stakes on Dec. 1, opening day at Tampa Bay Downs.

This victory last March in the Challenger Stakes sent Fort Larned on his way to eventually winning the Breeders' Cup Classic.

TAMPA BAY, Fla. - There were no klieg lights or microphones around the winner’s circle last Wednesday like there were after Fort Larned won the Breeders’ Cup Classic last November, but his trainer, Ian Wilkes, was still smiling broadly when he posed for victory pictures three times, with Carolina Cruisin, Forever Vow, and Nicklaus Way.
