Santa Anita: Shirreffs intends to stable string of horses at Belmont Park

John Shirreffs intends to move to New York this spring, but intends to keep 25 to 30 horses in Southern California.

ARCADIA, Calif.- Trainer John Shirreffs will have a stable in New York this spring, and plans to have divisions of his nationally prominent stable on two coasts in the future, he said on Sunday.

Shirreffs said he is in the process of contacting his clients to determine which horses will be sent to New York, and which will race in California. He said it was unclear how many horses would be based at Belmont Park in New York, but that approximately 25 to 30 would remain in California.

“I’ve got to talk to my owners and see what they’re comfortable with,” he said.

Amira’s Prince remained unbeaten in North America when he held off Willcox Inn for his fourth straight victory Saturday in the  Grade 2, $400,000 Mervin Muniz Memorial Handicap at Fair Grounds.

With Junior Alvarado riding for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, Amira’s Prince returned $4.60 as the favorite in a field of 10 older turf horses. The Irish-bred Amira’s Prince finished the 1 1/8-mile distance in 1:49.76 over a firm course.

ARCADIA, Calif.- The biggest fan of Doinghardtimeagain may be the guy who sat on her back in Saturday’s $200,750 Evening Jewel Stakes at Santa Anita.

Ridden for the first time by leading rider Rafael Bejarano, Doinghardtimeagain won the Evening Jewel Stakes for California-bred 3-year-old fillies by a convincing 3 1/2 lengths for her second stakes win. The patient style of her win left Bejarano elated.

“I love this kind of horse that can close,” Bejarano said. “I tried to find position and go from there. At the three-eighths pole, I had a lot of horse.”

Florida Derby: Orb pulls away from Itsmyluckyday

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. -   Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey was concerned when the meet began that the speed-favoring Gulfstream Park surface might not favor a late-running horse like Orb. But the ever-improving Orb put those fears to rest not once, not twice, but three times during the session, culminating a perfect winter in south Florida by rallying to a courageous 2 3/4-length victory over the 8-5 favorite Itsmyluckyday in Saturday’s $1 million Florida Derby.

Orb also gave jockey John Velazquez his fifth win on the card, four of those victories coming in graded stakes.

Graydar backed up his breakthrough score in the Donn Handicap by asserting himself late against a stubborn Mark Valeski for a clear-cut victory Saturday in the 88th running of the Grade 2, $400,000 New Orleans Handicap at Fair Grounds.

With Edgar Prado up for Twin Creeks Racing Stable and trainer Todd Pletcher, Graydar returned $4.60 as favorite in a field of eight older horses. Carrying high weight of 120 pounds while spotting his rivals one to nine pounds. He finished the 1 1/8-mile distance in 1:49.16 over a fast main track.

Gulfstream Park: Fast pace in Appleton sets up perfectly for Za Approval

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Za Approval took advantage of the presence of a fast pace and the absence of Data Link to win Saturday’s Grade 2, $100,000 Appleton Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

 Saving ground down the backside under Jose Lezcano, Za Approval was guided five wide on the far turn and rallied strongly down the stretch to beat Beaux Choix by two lengths. It was 1 1/2 lengths back to the pacesetting longshot King Kreesa in third.

Unlimited Budget pulls away from a game Flashy Gray to win the Fair Grounds Oaks and remain unbeaten.

NEW ORLEANS – Unlimited Budget gave trainer Todd Pletcher a sweep of the nation’s Kentucky Oaks preps on Saturday when she remained unbeaten with a thoroughly professional victory here in the Grade 2, $500,000 Fair Grounds Oaks.

Earlier in the day, Dreaming of Julia was an overpowering winner of the Gulfstream Oaks for Pletcher. Both races are worth 100 points to the winner under the system put in place by Churchill Downs to determine eligibility to the May 3 Kentucky Oaks, and those points are more than enough to put both in the maximum 14-horse field.
