Oaklawn: Ile St. Molly cruises in Rainbow Miss

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Ile St. Molly won the second stakes race of her young career Friday at Oaklawn Park, when she cruised to a 3 3/4-length win in the $60,000 Rainbow Miss. Sashabye finished second, a length clear of third-place finisher Pistolpackinpenny.

Gulfstream Park: Grace Hall ready for Apple Blossom at Oaklawn

Grace Hall has had three consecutive bullet workouts since finishing third in the Feb. 17 Sabin.

Grace Hall, the four-time graded stakes winner, tuned up for a start in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park by working four furlongs in 47.02 seconds Friday morning at Palm Meadows.

It was the fastest of 20 works at the distance and a sign to trainer Tony Dutrow that Grace Hall has moved forward since her well-beaten third-place finish behind Royal Delta in the Sabin.

Gulfstream Park: Nevin heading to New York

Teaks North won the Sunshine Millions Turf in her first start for trainer Michelle Nevin.

Michelle Nevin, who took over the stable operated by trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. when he began serving a 10-year suspension earlier this year, will take 27 head to New York. She will be stabled at Belmont Park.

Nevin won with her first starter, Teaks North, in the Sunshine Millions Turf here Jan. 19. She went 3 for 29 at the meet.

Teaks North finished second in the Mac Diarmida and last weekend ran sixth in the Pan American behind world-record setting Twilight Eclipse.

Gulfstream Park: Solis glad to be back

Alex Solis was sidelined by shoulder surgery.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Jockey Alex Solis finished third on both of his mounts Wednesday, but he was just happy to be riding again.

Solis, a finalist for the Hall of Fame this year, was away for five months after needing shoulder surgery.

Gulfstream Park: Twilight Eclipse likely for Elkhorn at Keeneland

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Twilight Eclipse, who set a world record for 1 1/2 miles on turf winning the Pan American in 2:22.63 on March 23, will likely make his next start in the Grade 2, $150,000 Elkhorn at Keeneland on April 26.

Terry Finley, head of the West Point Thoroughbreds syndicate that owns Twilight Eclipse, said that the Elkhorn would be a stepping-stone to Grade 1 races like the Man o’ War at Belmont and maybe the Sword Dancer at Saratoga this summer.

“He definitely wants to run a mile and a half,” Finely said. “Wherever they card those races, we’ll be there.”

Rodriguez gets third flunixin positive

Rudy Rodriguez, trainer of undefeated Kentucky Derby hopeful Vyjack, is currently serving a 20-day suspension for two positive tests for Banamine and could face further penalties after a third horse of his tested positive for the same drug.

Majestic Marquet, who won a $51,000 starter/optional-claiming race at Aqueduct on March 10, tested positive for Banamine, according to Gustavo Rodriguez, Rudy’s brother and his assistant, who is overseeing the stable in his brother’s absence.

Santa Anita: Beholder breezes for Santa Anita Oaks

Last year's champion 2-year-old filly Beholder, ridden by Garrett Gomez, scores by 3 3/4 lengths in the Las Virgenes.

Beholder, the champion 2-year-old filly of 2012, worked seven furlongs in 1:26.60 on Friday in preparation for the $300,000 Santa Anita Oaks next Saturday.

Trained by Richard Mandella, Beholder won the Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes over a mile March 2. On Friday, Beholder worked in company with Sarach, a two-time winner at this meeting who was fifth in the China Doll Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on turf March 9.

The Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks over 1 1/16 miles will have a small field.

Santa Anita notes: Paynter close to comeback race

Paynter, seriously ill after winning last year's Haskell, has worked out three times in recent weeks for trainer Bob Baffert.

Paynter, the 4-year-old colt who won the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational last August and then survived a severe bout with laminitis last summer and fall, is nearing a comeback race.

On Friday, Paynter worked a half-mile in 47.60 seconds, his fifth workout since resuming serious training earlier this year.

“He looked pretty good,” Baffert said. “He’s getting pretty close.”

Baffert has not picked a race for Paynter’s first start of 2013 but said it would not be at Santa Anita. The Santa Anita winter-spring meeting ends April 21.

One week after Gulfstream Park presents its cornerstone event, the $1 million Florida Derby, crosstown rival Calder Racecourse counters with a derby of its own, the $250,000 Calder Derby, which highlights Saturday’s opening-day program at the north Miami oval.

The 1 1/8-mile Calder Derby, which was switched from turf to dirt this season, attracted 29 nominations led by trainer Eddie Plesa Jr.’s duo of Itsmyluckyday and Speak Logistics, neither of whom will run.
