Louisiana Derby: Revolutionary's win marks him serious Kentucky Derby threat

Revolutionary holds off a determined Mylute to win the Louisiana Derby.

NEW ORLEANS – Whether he comes inside and knifes through traffic, or takes the scenic route and goes around everyone, Revolutionary is moving forward like a horse to be reckoned with in the Kentucky Derby on May 4.

Revolutionary ($6.80) took a significant step forward on Saturday, when he made a powerful, wide move on the final turn, then held off a pesky Mylute to win the Grade 2, $1 million Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds.

Florida Derby: Orb pulls away from Itsmyluckyday

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. -   Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey was concerned when the meet began that the speed-favoring Gulfstream Park surface might not favor a late-running horse like Orb. But the ever-improving Orb put those fears to rest not once, not twice, but three times during the session, culminating a perfect winter in south Florida by rallying to a courageous 2 3/4-length victory over the 8-5 favorite Itsmyluckyday in Saturday’s $1 million Florida Derby.

Orb also gave jockey John Velazquez his fifth win on the card, four of those victories coming in graded stakes.

Oaklawn: Goods Gone West gives connections Rainbow sweep

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Goods Gone West cruised to a 5 1/4-length win in the $60,000 Rainbow at Oaklawn Park on Saturday to give his owner, James H. Glover, and his trainer, Kenny Smith, a sweep of the track’s weekend stakes. Ile St. Molly on Friday accounted for the $60,000 Rainbow Miss for Glover and Smith.

Fair Grounds: Graydar outduels Mark Valeski in New Orleans Handicap

With Edgar Prado aboard, Graydar wins the New Orleans Handicap for his fourth win in five starts.

Graydar backed up his breakthrough score in the Donn Handicap by asserting himself late against a stubborn Mark Valeski for a clear-cut victory Saturday in the 88th running of the Grade 2, $400,000 New Orleans Handicap at Fair Grounds.

With Edgar Prado up for Twin Creeks Racing Stable and trainer Todd Pletcher, Graydar returned $4.60 as favorite in a field of eight older horses. Carrying high weight of 120 pounds while spotting his rivals one to nine pounds. He finished the 1 1/8-mile distance in 1:49.16 over a fast main track.

Gulfstream Park: Fast pace in Appleton sets up perfectly for Za Approval

Za Approval, the 2-1 favorite under Jose Lezcano, scores a two-length victory in the Grade 2 Appleton.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Za Approval took advantage of the presence of a fast pace and the absence of Data Link to win Saturday’s Grade 2, $100,000 Appleton Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

 Saving ground down the backside under Jose Lezcano, Za Approval was guided five wide on the far turn and rallied strongly down the stretch to beat Beaux Choix by two lengths. It was 1 1/2 lengths back to the pacesetting longshot King Kreesa in third.

Fair Grounds Oaks victory keeps Unlimited Budget unbeaten

Unlimited Budget pulls away from a game Flashy Gray to win the Fair Grounds Oaks and remain unbeaten.

NEW ORLEANS – Unlimited Budget gave trainer Todd Pletcher a sweep of the nation’s Kentucky Oaks preps on Saturday when she remained unbeaten with a thoroughly professional victory here in the Grade 2, $500,000 Fair Grounds Oaks.

Earlier in the day, Dreaming of Julia was an overpowering winner of the Gulfstream Oaks for Pletcher. Both races are worth 100 points to the winner under the system put in place by Churchill Downs to determine eligibility to the May 3 Kentucky Oaks, and those points are more than enough to put both in the maximum 14-horse field.

Gulfstream Park: Cigar Street wins Skip Away and boosts Mott barn

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Cigar Street thrust himself into the picture in the handicap division while at the same time salvaging what had been up to that point a disappointing day for the Bill Mott barn when he rallied to a two-length victory over Take Charge Indy in Saturday’s $100,000 Skip Away at Gulfstream Park. The win was the fourth on the card and third graded stakes tally on the day for jockey John Velazquez.

Aqueduct: Sunny Desert resumes winning ways in Broadway

Sunny Desert, who had her six-race winning streak snapped when third in the Grade 2 Top Flight Stakes four weeks ago, rebounded with an authoritative victory in Saturday’s $75,000 Broadway Stakes at Aqueduct.

Allowed to settle in fourth position, six lengths off a sharp early pace of 45.16 seconds set by Here’s Zealicious, Sunny Desert rallied outside under Cornelio Velasquez in the stretch, caught Here’s Zealicious and Clear Pasaj inside the furlong grounds, and drew off to win the six-furlong race by three lengths.

NEW ORLEANS - Back in Louisiana-bred company after being outrun against open fillies in the Grade 3 Honeybee at Oaklawn Park, Sittin At the Bar powered past her rivals in the stretch to score a three-quarter-length victory in the Crescent City Oaks on Saturday at the Fair Grounds.

Ridden by Shaun Bridgmohan for trainer Brett Brinkman and owner Dale Ladner, Sittin At the Bar pushed past pace-setter Mischievous Mama in midstretch. Hometown Gossip finished third, another 3 3/4 lengths behind Mischievous Mama, in a field of eight 3-year-old fillies.

Gulfstream Park: Regalo Mia makes up for past frustration with powerful Orchid victory

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - In a span of 10 weeks, Regalo Mia has wiped away a year marred by bad beats and bad health.

Powering down the center of what is left of the Gulfstream Park turf course, Regalo Mia bounded home a two-length winner of Saturday’s Grade 3, $150,000 Orchid Stakes. It was her second straight victory here, having won the Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf in January.

 Angegreen rallied from last to nose out Irish Mission for second. Anjaz was fourth followed by Starformer, Seanchai, Aigue Marine, Game Fair, Tree Hugger, and Closing Range.
