Aqueduct: Kibosh might be favored in Thursday's turf route

Bob Coglianese
Divine Luck has shown good early speed in each of her last two races after adding blinkers.

A quartet of Florida shippers will attract the bulk of the action in Thursday’s featured seventh race, an optional claimer with first-level allowance conditions scheduled for turf at 1 1/16 miles.

Kibosh enters off a rallying, runner-up finish with a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 86 for trainer John Kimmel, and the New York-bred filly may go off as a lukewarm favorite over fellow shippers Divine Luck, Riolama, and South Shore.

Keeneland: Watsdachances begins season in Appalachian Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
Watsdachances made two starts in Ireland before coming to the United States midway through her 2-year-old season.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Last fall, Watsdachances finished ahead of all but one other horse in the defining race in her niche, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. So when the Irish-bred filly makes her 3-year-old debut Thursday in the Grade 3 Appalachian Stakes at Keeneland, it will be with lofty expectations indeed for a big 2013.

Golden Gate: Pick-five carryover livens up Thursday card

If a $17,799 pick-six carryover doesn’t fire up Golden Gate Fields fans, how about a $149,941 pick-five carryover going into Thursday’s races?

The 50-cent bet, picking the winners of the final five races on the card, should attract plenty of wagering interest.

In the last leg of the wager, a $12,500 maiden claimer at 5 1/2 furlongs, fans may want to give a long look at first-timer Some Kind of Ride, trained by Aggie Ordonez.

Ordonez saddled her sixth winner from her past 10 starters dating back to March 7 when Mary’s Ap won the sixth race Sunday.

Keeneland: Pletcher looks strong for Kentucky Oaks

Barbara D. Livingston
Dreaming of Julia worked a half-mile in 49 seconds on Sunday.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Todd Pletcher not only holds a formidable hand for the Kentucky Derby with as many as five possible starters, but he might be even stronger with what he has for the Kentucky Oaks.

Pletcher figures to have two of the top choices for the May 3 Oaks in Dreaming of Julia and Unlimited Budget, both of whom were out for half-mile workouts Sunday morning over a fast main track at Churchill Downs. Dreaming of Julia, going solo, went in 49 seconds, while Unlimited Budget went in 48.60 seconds in company with yet another Oaks-bound Pletcher filly, Silsita.

Aqueduct: No plans yet for Cluster of Stars

Courtney Heeney
Cluster of Stars wins the Grade 2 Distaff Handicap by 2 3/4 lengths at Aqueduct.

Cluster of Stars came out of her 2 3/4-length victory in Saturday’s Grade 2 Distaff Handicap in good order, assistant trainer Toby Sheets said Monday, but no plans have yet been made for her next start.

Sheets did confirm that Cluster of Stars would not be wheeled right back in the Humana Distaff at Churchill Downs on Derby Day. The Humana Distaff is one of just three Grade 1 dirt sprints for older fillies and mares on the calendar before the Breeders’ Cup. The Princess Rooney at Calder on July 6 and the Ballerina at Saratoga on Aug. 23 are the others.

West Hills Giant to focus on Big Apple Triple

Michael Amoruso
West Hills Giant is being pointed to the Mike Lee Stakes on June 1 at Belmont Park.

While trainer John Terranova and his connections ponder whether to run Falling Sky in the Kentucky Derby, the focus for West Hills Giant is a different sort of Triple Crown.

West Hills Giant, who finished 12th in the Blue Grass Stakes, will likely be pointed to the three-race series restricted to New York-breds known as the Big Apple Triple.
