Kentucky Derby workouts: Code West outworked by Oaks filly Midnight Lucky

Barbara D. Livingston
Code West, with Mike Smith up, goes five furlongs in 59.80 seconds, but was passed on the gallop out by the 3-year-old filly Midnight Lucky.

[bc_video_id:290689:]LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Saturday’s workout mayhem led to a relatively calm Sunday morning at Churchill Downs, where a couple of Kentucky Oaks workers stole most of the thunder, at least temporarily, from this year’s Kentucky Derby field.

With half the prospective Derby lineup having worked on Saturday, many of those drills moved forward 24 hours because of weather and track considerations, only Code West breezed on Sunday and afterwards  his status as a Derby starter was deemed “very unlikely” by trainer Bob Baffert.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Though it is becoming increasingly likely trainer Bob Baffert won’t have a runner in this year’s Kentucky Derby, there is no doubt he has a serious one in Friday’s $1 million Kentucky Oaks.

On an otherwise quiet Sunday morning at Churchill Downs, Midnight Lucky had observers in awe with a sensational five-furlong workout over the main track.

Kentucky Derby: Baffert unlikely to have a starter

Barbara D. Livingston
Code West (right), working in company with the filly Midnight Lucky on Sunday, is probably headed to the Peter Pan and then the Belmont Stakes.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – When it comes to getting horses to this year’s Kentucky Derby next Saturday, it has been the tale of two trainers, the best of times for Todd Pletcher, who it looks will have five in the race, and the worst of times for Bob Baffert, who all but ruled out both Code West and Govenor Charlie on Sunday morning.
