Kentucky Derby: Apollo stands along among winners

Barbara D. Livingston
Verrazano will try to join Apollo as the only Derby winners who did not race at 2.

Apollo gets mentioned whenever there's a Kentucky Derby contender who didn't compete as a juvenile - like Verrazano, one of this year's favorites. Apollo won the race in 1882 and remains the only Derby winner without any starts at 2.

"Some fools think he's a right smart horse, though he ain't," was the assessment of Green B. Morris, Apollo's trainer and co-owner, when asked about his Derby chances in early 1882. But Morris wagered heavily on Apollo in the Derby winter books.

Kentucky Derby: Trainer Plesa gets second shot with Itsmyluckyday

Barbara D. Livingston
Eddie Plesa Jr. is extremely pleased with how Itsmyluckyday is coming into Saturday’s Kentucky Derby. Fourteen years ago, his only other Derby starter, the filly Three Ring, finished last after a poor start in the classic.

The field was less than an eighth of a mile into the race when trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. knew his first Kentucky Derby experience was not going to be a memorable one.

Three Ring, one of two fillies in the 19-horse field for the 1999 Kentucky Derby, had ducked in at the break under jockey John Velazquez, bumping with Adonis, who was to her inside. A filly who preferred to be forwardly placed, Three Ring was now in midpack. She would finish last.

Louisiana Downs: Miss Addison returns to best distance for turf feature

Miss Addison will be shortening up to the distance that produced her best recent finish for Saturday’s ninth race at Louisiana Downs. A first-level allowance at 7 1/2 furlongs on turf, it drew nine fillies and mares, including the multiple stakes-placed Sashabye.

Miss Addison last raced at a mile and finished fifth in a Fair Grounds allowance March 29. One start prior, she was second in another allowance at the track, over 7 1/2 furlongs Dec. 9. For the effort, Miss Addison earned her best recent Beyer Speed Figure, a 79.

Kentucky Derby: NBC will include Stevens during broadcast

Barbara D. Livingston
Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, who will ride Oxbow in the Kentucky Derby, will be equipped with a microphone when he rides in the Kentucky Oaks and several other races on Saturday as part of his duties for NBC Sports.

Gary Stevens, who will be riding in his first Kentucky Derby since 2005, said he felt a bit of déjà vu this week when visiting the NBC compound at Churchill Downs, where he has spent the last several Derby Days working as an analyst.

Liaison, racing for the first time since last summer's Travers, scores by a half-length with Martin Garcia aboard in the Santana Mile.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – The Kentucky Derby is not the end of the line.

Churchill Downs: Aubby K tries to fill Groupie Doll's shoes in Humana

Barbara D. Livingston
Emma's Encore, who won the Prioress at Saratoga last summer, is the lone Grade 1 winner in the field for Saturday's Grade 1 Humana Distaff.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – With reigning champ Groupie Doll still on the sidelines, the filly and mare sprint division remains wide open and begging for someone to step up and take control – at least until the queen returns to reclaim her throne later this season.

On Saturday, nine hopefuls will look to fill Groupie Doll’s very big shoes when squaring off in the $300,000 Humana Distaff at Churchill Downs. Groupie Doll dominated the 2012 Humana Distaff, using her victory in the Grade 1 dash as a springboard to her championship campaign.
