Belmont Park: Amberjack pulls clear in Mike Lee Stakes

Chelsea Durand/NYRA
Amberjack, with Junior Alvarado up, wins the Mike Lee Stakes by 1 3/4 lengths.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Displaying the ability to come from off the pace, Amberjack ran past the dueling leader Weekend Hideaway to win Saturday’s $125,000 Mike Lee Stakes for New York-bred 3-year-olds at Belmont Park.

Weekend Hideaway, the 7-5 favorite, finished second after dueling with Hay Shares through a strong early pace. Smooth Bert was third and followed in the order of finish by Soul House, West Hills Giant – who stumbled badly at the break – Hay Shares and Run Forrest Run. Bond Vigilante and Belief System scratched.

Belmont Stakes workouts: Always in a Tiz shakes off the rust

Barbara D. Livingston
Always in a Tiz has not raced since finishing ninth in the Wood Memorial on April 6.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Saturday proved to be another warm and relatively uneventful morning at Belmont Park so far as the 10 prospective Belmont Stakes starters stabled on the grounds were concerned. Only one member of that group, Always in a Tiz, turned in a recorded workout, with the majority of the others gearing up for their scheduled workouts here Sunday.

Scatman wins the the Grade 3, $106,800 Aristides by a neck over Jasizzle.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Scatman inspired considerable hope in the Hall of Fame barn of Bill Mott last fall in Kentucky, but the colt and his form went south – literally and figuratively – over the winter.

Back to his Kentucky-loving self, Scatman wore down Jasizzle in the final furlong Saturday for his first career stakes victory in the 25th running of the Grade 3, $106,800 Aristides over a sloppy Churchill Downs track.

Chelsea Durand
Lovely Syn, ridden for the first time by Javier Castellano, wins her fourth consecutive start in the Bouwerie for New York-bred 3-year-old fillies.

ELMONT, N.Y. - In what amounted to little more than a paid public workout, Lovely Syn rolled to a 10 1/4 length victory in Saturday’s $125,000 Bouwerie Stakes for New York-bred 3-year-old fillies at Belmont Park.

Presque Isle Downs: Cloudy Vow cuts back in return from layoff

Cloudy Vow, who was good enough last fall to pick up small pieces of the purse in a pair of Grade 2 stakes in Kentucky, returns to the place where she began her racing career Tuesday evening at Presque Isle Downs.

The 3-year-old Cloudy Vow shifts from dirt to Presque Isle’s synthetic Tapeta surface and cuts back sharply in distance from 1 1/16 miles to 6 1/2 furlongs seeking her second victory in Tuesday’s fourth race, a nonwinners-of-two allowance with a $36,000 purse.

Belmont Stakes: Always in a Tiz looks ready after work

Barbara D. Livingston
Always in a Tiz has not raced since finishing ninth in the Wood Memorial on April 6.

ELMONT, N.Y. – The road to the Kentucky Derby for Always in a Tiz was full of potholes. A troubled trip in one prep, a disdain for a sloppy track in another, and an absolute debacle in a third kept the horse from making it to the Run for the Roses.

The connections of Always in a Tiz are hopeful their winter – and early spring – of discontent are behind their 3-year-old and are hoping for a dramatic change of fortune in the 145th Belmont Stakes to be run next Saturday.

Belmont Stakes: Frac Daddy could be entered in race

Barbara D. Livingston
Frac Daddy likely will run in the Grade 1 Florida Derby on March 30 if his throat ulcer has healed sufficiently.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Trainer Ken McPeek revealed Saturday that he is seriously considering entering Frac Daddy in the Belmont Stakes.

Frac Daddy, 16th in the May 4 Kentucky Derby as a 25-1 shot, has had three swift workouts at Churchill Downs within a two-week span, ending with a bullet half-mile drill Friday in 47.80 seconds.

“He’s training as well as I’ve ever seen,” McPeek said. “It’s like [D. Wayne] Lukas says, you can’t win it unless you’re in it.”

McPeek engineered the biggest upset in Belmont history when sending out Sarava to a 70-1 victory in the 2002 running.
