ELMONT, N.Y. – In the world of overnight stakes in New York, it is quite common for a trainer to be represented in the race for whom the horse is named. The instance is rare, however, for the honored horse to be represented by one of its own progeny.
Such is the case Sunday when Caroline Thomas, a daughter produced by the Grade 1-winning mare Bit of Whimsy, runs in the $90,000 Bit of Whimsy Stakes at Belmont Park.
ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Saratoga-based Winning Cause, a Polytrack specialist, is the big name in Sunday’s $150,000 Victoria Park Stakes, a nine-furlong event for 3-year-olds at Woodbine.
Winning Cause is trained by Todd Pletcher, who won the 2010 Victoria Park with Exhi.
Winning Cause graduated going about seven furlongs on Keeneland’s Polytrack in October. After ending up second and fifth in two stakes on Aqueduct’s inner track over the winter, he rallied from left field to notch a seven-furlong allowance win at Keeneland on April 6.
Not even a recent incident of roughhousing on a backstretch walking machine can keep Pk Fire from a start in the Vessels Maturity trials for older Quarter Horses at Los Alamitos on Sunday evening.
Pk Fire emerged from an early June mishap on the horse-walker “scratched up a little bit,” trainer Jaime Gomez said. But after galloping and being ponied in the last week, Gomez on Thursday pronounced Pk Fire fit for the 400-yard trials.
OCEANPORT, N.J. – The first major stakes for 3-year-olds following the Triple Crown is a good one: a rematch between Verrazano and Itsmyluckyday on Sunday in the Grade 3, $150,000 Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park.
The Pegasus kicks off the second half of the season for the division. It also serves a prep for the meet’s premier event – and the long-range target for Verrazano and Itsmyluckyday – the Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Invitational on July 28.
VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Devil in Disguise should relish his first chance to go around three turns this year when he runs in an allowance race that drew seven horses going 1 1/16 miles at Hastings on Sunday.
This will be the first time he hasn’t faced stakes company in more than a year, and he figures to be a short price in the race for 3-year-olds and up that was designed for horses who haven’t won a stakes race at the current meet.
FORT ERIE, Ontario – Katy Morrison decided last fall at the age of 25 that it was time to fulfill a challenge and dream that had been with her for years.
After obtaining her apprentice jockey’s license, it was time for her first official ride on Whinny Pooh on Sept. 21 at Woodbine.
“I was excited as I sat in the jocks’ room, but once we left the paddock for post parade, I was not nervous,” Morrison said. “In practice over the years, I had been to the gate many times, and now, minutes away from my first race, I felt calm and confident.
Balooga Bull, Manitoba’s horse of the year for 2012, failed to hold off an onrushing Pleasant Closing when he made his seasonal debut in the 5 1/2-furlong allowance prep for the Free Press Stakes.
On Sunday, Balooga Bull will be looking to redeem himself in the $30,000 Free Press, a six-furlong race for 3-year-olds and up.
Balooga Bull, owned by Paul Brandt and trained by Ardell Sayler, was the 1-20 favorite in the May 29 prep.
Jockey Tim Thornton fractured a sinus cavity and injured a shoulder in a chain reaction accident in Thursday’s fourth race at Canterbury Park, according to his agent, Jimmy Ernesto. Doctors also found a cerebral embolism, which they believe will heal by itself, said Ernesto, who spoke to a family member about Thornton’s condition.
Thornton was taken to a nearby hospital where he was to have his shoulder X-rayed Friday for possible fractures.
Threedeewoodee should be a force from the rail in the $356,980 Mountain Top Futurity for New Mexico-bred Quarter Horses on Saturday at Ruidoso Downs. The 350-yard race goes with a full field of 10.
Threedeewoodee is arguably the most accomplished member of the field. He won his debut at Sunland on March 15 in a trial for the Grade 2 New Mexican Spring Futurity and came back to finish second by a half-length in the finale April 7. From there, Threedeewoodee romped by 2 3/4 lengths in his May 31 trial for the Mountain Top.
With a collective 17 stakes wins, Tulsa Te, Dance to the Star, Wally Van, and E F Five have established themselves as some of the best Colorado-breds in training. On Saturday, the $35,000 Aspen at Arapahoe Park brings all four older horses together. Wally Van is the defending champ in the six-furlong race for Colorado-breds, while E F Five won the race in 2011.
