INGLEWOOD, Calif. – The custom of winning a maiden race with a 2-year-old and then advancing to a stakes is being challenged this weekend at Betfair Hollywood Park.

In Saturday’s $150,000 Hollywood Juvenile Championship, four of the seven runners in the Grade 3 race at six furlongs are maidens, and three are first-time starters – Bond Holder, Carson’s Ten, and Knock Em Flat.

They must beat two runners with stakes experience – Willie B Awesome and Solid Wager, who were second and third, respectively, in the Willard Proctor Memorial Stakes on June 15.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – She’s a Tiger won her debut by nine lengths at the Alameda County Fair at Pleasanton on June 22. It was not a surprise. She’s a Tiger overwhelmed three rivals at odds of 1-5.

“You don’t get too many like her,” trainer Jeff Bonde said.

A half-sister to the Grade 1 winner Smiling Tiger, She’s a Tiger makes her stakes debut in the $100,000 Landaluce Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Betfair Hollywood Park on Saturday. She may not be 1-5 in the Landaluce, but she will be favored to win the six-furlong race.

The weather forecast will guide trainer Alan Goldberg’s strategy for the Grade 3, $200,000 Robert G. Dick Memorial on Saturday at Delaware Park.

The Dick, the supporting event on a card topped by the Grade 2 Delaware Oaks, attracted 10 fillies and mares for the three-turn contest at 1 3/8 miles on the turf.

Goldberg has two standout Irish-bred entrants in Laughing and Tannery. Only one will run, depending on course conditions.

On June 1 at Penn National, the unofficial title of the country’s top 3-year-old turf miler was decided when Rydilluc defeated Charming Kitten and Jack Milton in the $500,000 Penn Mile, the richest race for sophomore turf horses run to that point in 2013.

A month and a half later, Saturday’s Grade 2, $500,000 Virginia Derby is set to determine the 3-year-old pecking order going the longer turf distance of 1 1/4 miles.

SHAKOPEE, Minn. – The $100,000 Lady Canterbury Stakes brings together a full field of fillies and mares for Canterbury Park’s top race for older females. In a new twist this year, the Lady Canterbury will serve as the supporting feature to the inaugural running of the $125,000 Mystic Lake Mile.

The Lady Canterbury, a one-mile turf race, is headed by graded stakes winner Bryan’s Jewel, who races for local owners Barry and Joni Butzow and perennial Canterbury Park leading trainer Mac Robertson.

ELMONT, N.Y. – With defending Man o’ War Stakes winner Point of Entry recovering from a hind leg injury, trainer Shug McGaughey hopes Boisterous can be a suitable substitution in Saturday’s 55th renewal of the Grade 1 marathon turf stakes at Belmont Park.

Coming off a win in the Grade 2 Monmouth Stakes on June 9, Boisterous could be poised to win his most prestigious race to date in the $600,000 Man o’ War, a 1 3/8-mile race scheduled for the inner turf course with a field of eight.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – Sarach has fooled Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella at times this year.

A 3-year-old filly, Sarach won a maiden race on turf at Santa Anita on Jan. 5, leaving Mandella optimistic about her chances through the rest of that meeting.

“We’d been hoping she’d be good enough, and she did show something when she broke her maiden,” Mandella said. “I tried her in a few stakes, and she wasn’t as good.”

[bc_video_id:297849:]Upon her birth at Sagamore Farm in Maryland, Tell a Great Story was referred to as a “dummy foal” because she didn’t know how to suckle her mother and lacked normal reflexes. She has been anything but a slow learner on the racetrack, however.

After surviving a potentially life-threatening situation, in which she also had trouble breathing, Tell a Great Story won her career debut, just missed in her first try going two turns, and scored by the slimmest of margins in her stakes debut.

Jockey Quincy Welch is out indefinitely after breaking his collarbone when he went down in a spill aboard Boston Rob in the seventh race at Northlands Park on Wednesday evening.

Boston Rob was rallying at the top of the stretch but clipped heels when he was sandwiched between Tway, who drifted out, and Mountain Minister, who was on his outside.

According to his agent Bob Fowlis, Welch was scheduled for surgery Thursday at Royal Alexander Hospital.
