Monmouth Park: Pants On Fire wins Monmouth Cup; Take Charge Indy injured

Pants on Fire and jockey Paco Lopez win the Grade 2 Monmouth Cup by 1 3/4 lengths Sunday.

OCEANPORT, N.J. – Pants On Fire pulled a 7-1 upset in the Grade 2, $203,000 Monmouth Cup after odds-on favorite Take Charge Indy was pulled up entering the final turn.

Take Charge Indy appeared well in control of the 1 1/16-mile race formerly known as The Meadowlands Cup. He was cruising on the lead when the injury occurred.

Gary Stevens quickly pulled up the winner of last year’s Grade 1 Florida Derby, and the 4-year-old colt was vanned back to the barn area with a left-front condylar fracture that will require surgery.

Beulah Park: Uptown Gal wins Queen City Oaks

Uptown Gal came from just off the pace to win the $75,000 Queen City Oaks at the River Downs at Beulah Park meet Sunday.

Jockey Gabriel Lagunes kept Uptown Gal within a length of the pacesetting Blazing Bling until upper stretch. Lagunes then swung out his charge, and the Jim Rankin trainee drew off for a 5 1/4-length win.

Deniro's Saint was kept back early in the field of seven 3-year-old Ohio-bred fillies before rallying for second, 2 1/2 lengths in front of a tiring Blazing Bling in third.

OCEANPORT, N.J. – When Larry Jones, the trainer of morning-line favorite Joyful Victory, heard that his main rival, Funny Proposition, was scratched from Sunday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Molly Pitcher Stakes at Monmouth Park, he had mixed emotions.

As a friend of Mark Casse, the trainer of Funny Proposition, Jones said, “I was hoping there was nothing seriously wrong with his horse, but I knew it would make my job a lot easier this afternoon.”

Monmouth Park: Starstruck gets first U.S. stakes win in Matchmaker

OCEANPORT, N.J. – Trainer Larry Jones put the blinkers back on, and Starstruck responded with her first U.S. stakes victory in the Grade 3, $158,000 Matchmaker for fillies and mares on turf Sunday at Monmouth Park.

After stalking the pace set by Minakshi, Starstruck and jockey Rosie Napravnik made their move on the final turn. Four wide into the lane, Starstruck battled for command before edging clear late.

A 4-year-old bred in Ireland, Starstruck beat Naples Bay by 1 1/4 lengths, with Minakshi holding on for third.

Monmouth Park: Immortal Eyes hangs on to win Teddy Drone

Immortal Eyes, ridden by Paco Lopez, wins the Teddy Drone Stakes by a neck Sunday to improve to 3 for 3 at the current Monmouth Park meet.

OCEANPORT, N.J. – Immortal Eyes continued his big meet at Monmouth Park on Sunday, winning the $107,000 Teddy Drone, the first of seven stakes on Haskell Day.

The Maryland-based 8-year-old gelding is 3 for 3 at the meet, having earlier won a third-level allowance followed by the Mr. Prospector Stakes.

Speed is his game, and Immortal Eyes, the 3-5 favorite, had his pedal to the metal throughout the six-furlong dash. He fired away from the gate and had immediate pressure from He Can Run as they zipped through an opening quarter-mile in 21.86 seconds.

Evangeline Downs: Solid Sender, Le Gris win Young Futurity divisions

OPELOUSAS, La. – Much as she did in winning her qualifying trial three weeks ago, Solid Sender unleashed a furious rally down the stretch to capture the $128,425 fillies division of the D. S. "Shine" Young Futurity on Saturday night at Evangeline Downs.

The pacesetter and favorite, Whata Friend, unbeaten in two previous starts, managed to save the second spot, 2 1/4 lengths behind the winner and three-quarters of a length in front of third-place finisher Lady Notional. The final time for the 5 1/2 furlongs over a strip muddied by afternoon rains was 1:04.15.

ALTOONA, Iowa – The classy Golden Ticket assumed command early and cruised to an eight-length victory in Saturday evening's $100,000 Prairie Meadows Handicap, a 1 1/4-mile test that attracted five runners.

Golden Ticket ($2.20), who dead-heated for the win in last August's Grade 1 Travers with Alpha and most recently ran second to Fort Larned in the June 15 Stephen Foster, was guided around the oval by Terry Thompson for trainer Ken McPeek.
