Northlands: Ready Racer nearing top form

Ready Racer appears to be rounding into the form that saw him win the $50,000 Sun Sprint Championship last year and ultimately be named the 2012 sprinter of the year in Alberta. He was a sharp winner of a $25,000 claiming race July 5 and figures to be a solid favorite when he runs in an optional $35,000 claiming race that will serve as Monday’s feature at Northlands Park.

The six-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds and up drew seven horses and goes as race 7 on an eight race card that begins at 1 p.m. Mountain.

Saratoga: Rocco proving he can compete with the sport's best

Barbara D. Livingston
Joe Rocco Jr. returns aboard Lighthouse Bay after winning the Grade 1 Prioress.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – When George Weaver decided at the last minute to run Lighthouse Bay in the Grade 1 Prioress Stakes here on July 27, he had many riders from which to choose.

He selected Joe Rocco Jr.

“I was looking at what I had available; I was like, this is going to be a great fit,” said Weaver, who had been impressed with Rocco this winter at Gulfstream. “I was really happy about it. Sometimes you ride jockeys and you don’t always get the jockey you want. I didn’t feel like I was taking a backseat at all. I was extremely confident that he could get it done.”
