Gulfstream: Much-improved Grande Shores stretches out for Montbrook

Black Diamond Cat, with Luca Panici aboard, rewards his backers with a $29.20 payoff for winning the Ponche Handicap.

HALLANDALE BACH, Fla. – Seven months ago, Grande Shores was running in $8,000 claiming races at Tampa Bay Downs. On Saturday, Grande Shores will compete for a $100,000 purse at Gulfstream Park as one of the favorites in the one-mile Montbrook Stakes.

Grand Shores was always cut out to be a good horse. As a 2-year-old, he finished second behind Gourmet Dinner in Calder’s Dr. Fager Stakes. But shortly thereafter, he was stricken with a chronic case of colitis that nearly claimed his life.

Calder: Foolish Pleasure highlight of four-stakes card

Brothersofthetime takes the lead in the stretch of the Seacliff at Calder last month. He held off East Hall (left) by a nose and meets that rival again on Saturday.

MIAMI – The $85,000 Foolish Pleasure Stakes has traditionally been an attractive alternative for south Florida-based juveniles not eligible for the lucrative Stallion Stakes races, which have dominated the summer schedule at Calder since its inception more than 30 years ago.

Parx Racing: Swift Warrior holds class edge in PTHA President's Cup

John Duca/Tom Cooley
Swift Warrior takes the Tampa Bay Stakes in a furious finish.

Swift Warrior, a two-time Grade 3 stakes winner early this season who was beaten less than a length in a Grade 2 event two starts back, appears to hold a distinct class advantage in Saturday’s $250,000 Pennsylvania Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association President’s Cup at Parx Racing.

The President’s Cup, scheduled for 1 1/8 miles on turf, goes as race 11 on a 12-race card and drew a field of 12 older males, including a coupled entry.

Barretts at Fairplex: City by the Bay bargain-priced Debutante favorite

Benoit & Associates
Meinertzhageni used a stretch rally to win this Del Mar maiden race, and could be a late threat in the Barretts Debutante.

POMONA, Calif. – She was Hip No. 15 at the Barretts May sale of 2-year-olds in training, and she was likely to be outside trainer Bill Morey’s budget.

After all, City by the Bay previously sold for $110,000 at a yearling auction, breezed in a snappy 10.20 seconds at Barretts, and was by the popular stallion City Zip.

“I had pretty much written her off as too high,” Morey said. “She worked super, and initially we didn’t think we could get her.”

ELMONT, N.Y. – The connections of Better Lucky are hoping there’s some truth to the adage about good things coming to those who wait as their 4-year-old filly makes her first start in three months in Saturday’s Grade  3, $200,000 Noble Damsel Stakes at Belmont Park.

Woodbine notes: Attfield trio takes aim at Canadian Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
No Explaining will start in Sunday's Grade 2 Canadian Stakes at Woodbine.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Stakes fields of modest size, unfortunately, were the main order of the day Thursday, with six entered in Sunday’s Woodbine Mile, seven in the Northern Dancer, and six in the Ontario Derby. But the Canadian Stakes had fared better when the entry box closed Thursday, as a field of nine fillies and mares was unveiled for the Grade 2, $300,000 turf race at 1 1/8 miles.

Finger Lakes: Miss Rubycubes has work cut out in Jack Betta Be Rite

The 3-year-old filly Miss Rubycubes, 2 for 2 since she stretched out around two turns, challenges older New York-bred fillies and mares in Saturday’s $50,000 Jack Betta Be Rite Handicap at Finger Lakes.

Northlands Park: Stakes winner Proud Victor should move forward

Singling a couple of Greg Tracy-trained standouts might be the way to play the final pick three at Northlands Park on Saturday.

Tracy has an excellent chance of winning a $35,000 optional claiming race for 3-year-olds with Proud Victor in the seventh race. Claresmiezie figures to be favored to win a $35,000 optional claiming race for fillies and mares in the eighth. Both races will be contested over 6 1/2 furlongs. Gabe’s Pride looks like the logical favorite in the ninth but he’s vulnerable and anyone playing the pick three should consider going deep in the final leg.

Woodbine: Asserting Bear tries to emulate sire in Summer Stakes

Michael Burns
Asserting Bear puts his head in front of Tropic of Artie to win a maiden sprint last month. They both return in the Summer Stakes on Saturday.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Bear Stable, trainer Reade Baker, and jockey Jim McAleney combined to take the 2005 Summer Stakes with Bear’s Kid, and they will team up again in the Grade 2 race Saturday at Woodbine with a promising son of Bear’s Kid, Asserting Bear.

The $200,000 Summer, a Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re in qualifier for the Juvenile Turf, drew 10 2-year-olds who will negotiate a mile on the grass. Two of the Summer entrants, supplements My Conquestadory and Spanish Flower, were cross-entered in Saturday’s Grade 2 Natalma for 2-year-old fillies.
