Barretts at Fairplex: Gryder dressed for success

Barbara D. Livingston
Aaron Gryder is riding this season at Hastings in Vancouver, British Columbia.

POMONA, Calif. – Have saddle, will travel.

One problem: Jockey Aaron Gryder did not have a saddle. He also did not have riding pants.

Gryder, currently third-leading rider at Hastings Park and among the most well-liked jockeys locally, was home visiting in Southern California last week when he was offered the chance to ride a weekend card in the Virgin Islands.

That would be a challenge without tack. Gryder turned to a friend, jockey Mike Smith, and told him his riding equipment was up at Hastings. Smith asked what Gryder needed.

Woodbine notes: Ultimate Destiny eyes win on the track in Overskate

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Owner-trainer Alec Fehr was a winner in the courtroom Thursday, when the Ontario Racing Commission allowed his appeal of a stewards’ decision that declared Ultimate Destiny a non-starter following his second-place finish in the Seagram Cup after the horse’s gate opened prematurely.

On Sunday, Fehr will be looking to become a winner on the racetrack when Ultimate Destiny faces seven rivals in the seven-furlong, $125,000 Overskate Stakes for Ontario-sired 3-year-olds and up.

Kentucky notes: Golden Soul to regroup after Kentucky Downs flop

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – His fans and critics had asked for class relief for Golden Soul, and that’s what they got this week when the 2013 Kentucky Derby runner-up dropped into first-level allowance company at Kentucky Downs.

Alas, that was no help either, although the undulating turf might have had something to do with another disappointing performance from the colt. With regular rider Robby Albarado aboard, Golden Soul was never a factor when finishing ninth, beaten seven lengths, in an $87,696 allowance race at 1 1/2 miles Wednesday at the south-central Kentucky track.

Barretts at Fairplex: Clubhouse Ride comes full circle for Ralph M. Hinds

Benoit & Associates
Clubhouse Ride, winning the Grade 2 Californian, came out of the San Diego Handicap sick but has recovered.

POMONA, Calif. – It all started at Barretts for Clubhouse Ride. The question Sunday is whether his campaign will end at the same place.

Even his trainer is unsure. Purchased for $22,000 at Barretts and closing in on $1 million in earnings, Clubhouse Ride faces eight rivals in the $100,000 Ralph M. Hinds Handicap on closing day of the Los Angeles County Fair meet. His current form is dubious.

Fort Erie: Uncertainty over 2014 season clouds track's future

FORT ERIE, Ontario – With less than a month to go in the season, it’s that time again at the Fort Erie Race Track when the worry begins.

It begins for the town, horsepeople, fans, and all those personnel and businesses related directly or indirectly to the operation of the track. Will there be a racing season in 2014?

Because of a major change in the overall funding for Ontario racetracks in 2012, it was not until April 2013 that Ontario premier Kathleen Wynne authorized $5.6 million and a 50-day (400-race) 2013 meeting for this border oval.

Hastings: Improving Courtroom Kiss goes for third straight win

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Courtroom Kiss showed a new dimension when she returned from a three-month layoff to win a $17,500 claiming race going 6 1/2 furlongs Aug. 30. Instead of using her good speed to contest the early pace, she settled early and made a strong late move to win going away.

Courtroom Kiss should have an honest pace to run at in an unrestricted allowance race that headlines Sunday’s eight-race card at Hastings, and if she can employ the same running style she could notch her third straight win.

Woodbine: Phil’s Dream, Ultimate Destiny go up against two champions in Overskate

Michael Burns
Phil’s Dream, who won an optional claiming race (above) on Sept. 1, has missed the top two only once in six starts since returning from a 22-month absence in April.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Phil’s Dream will take another crack at Ontario-sired stakes company Sunday at Woodbine in the $125,000 Overskate Stakes, a seven-furlong sprint that lured seven other runners.

Phil’s Dream, a 5-year-old owned and trained by Paul Buttigieg, has missed the top two only once in six starts since returning from a 22-month absence in April.

“He tried to bow (a tendon) as a 3-year-old,” Buttigieg recalled. “I gave him a year off and it did the job. It healed completely.”
