Arethusa, ridden by Corey Nakatani, goes from last to first in the Sharp Cat Stakes for 2-year-old fillies.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Arethusa earned a start in the Grade 1 Hollywood Starlet on Dec. 7 with a powerful victory Saturday in the Sharp Cat Stakes for 2-year-old fillies. It was the first victory for Arethusa after three losses, all in maiden races.

Those maiden races, though, were solid efforts behind Be Proud and Georgia, who were the top two choices in the Sharp Cat. That, along with the small field, prompted trainer Eoin Harty and owner Darley Stable to give the 1 1/16-mile Sharp Cat a try.

Standing behind the desk that had been part of his workspace for 20 years, Panza looked around and said, “Yes, been here a long time.”

Churchill Downs: King David remains on vet's list, will miss River City

Tom Keyser
King David has raced just once since late January, winning a second-level allowance on turf at Churchill Downs in September.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Although King David has been assigned the high weight of 121 pounds for the lone stakes of the coming weekend at Churchill Downs, the Grade 3 River City on Saturday, the 4-year-old colt will not be permitted to start after failing to get off the state veterinarian’s list following a workout last Saturday at his Trackside training center base.

State veterinarian William Farmer confirmed Monday that he is “working with” trainer Mike Maker in getting King David eligible to race again but said “there is no set time” when that will happen.

Shigeki Kikkawa
Silentio, the winner of the Sir Beaufort Stakes at Santa Anita in December, will start in the Del Mar Mile on Aug. 25.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – A day after dumping his rider and getting loose when scheduled to work, Silentio behaved much better on Saturday morning at Betfair Hollywood Park, turning in a drill that encouraged his trainer, Gary Mandella, to believe he was on course for the Citation Handicap later this month following an outstanding effort last time out in the Breeders’ Cup Mile.

Silentio on Friday was supposed to go six furlongs under jockey Rafael Bejarano, but he dumped Bejarano and ran loose on the track before being corralled by an outrider.
