Santa Anita: Peace and Justice impresses

Tom Keyser
Peace and Justice won a one-mile turf allowance by 5 1/4 lengths Sunday at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Peace and Justice won first time out, bolted to the outside in his second start, then ran off to a long lead and faded in his third. Last Sunday, in start No. 4, he was dazzling, running away from a first-level allowance field on turf in a manner that suggested that stakes races are in his future. But can such an inconsistent horse be trusted?

Santa Anita: Blingo to stick to dirt

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Blingo wins the I'm a Banker Stakes at Belmont Park in October.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Blingo began his career on turf and has raced mostly on turf and synthetic surfaces during an oft-interrupted career, but a recent win at Belmont Park, coupled with strong subsequent works, has convinced trainer John Shirreffs that dirt is his preferred surface, so he will remain on dirt for the Grade 2, $200,000 San Pasqual Stakes for older horses Saturday.

Benoit & Associates
Kristo has not raced since winning his maiden in his third career start at Santa Anita on Oct. 31.

ARCADIA, Calif. – It took three starts, but Kristo finally showed what all the hype was about when scoring a romping win against maidens going two turns during the fall meeting here at Santa Anita. It was the third straight race in which he was sent off at 3-5, and it followed a pair of runner-up finishes in sprints against maidens, one at Del Mar and one here.

Golden Gate Fields: Mahorney looks for win with debuting Expensive Jet

No matter where Expensive Jet finishes in his debut in Thursday’s second race at Golden Gate Fields, trainer Cinda Mahorney will consider the day a success.

Mahorney is the daughter of jockey Bill Mahorney, one of Northern California’s top riders in the B.B. (Before Baze) era. He won more than 2,500 races before his career was cut short by injuries.

Cinda Mahorney, 42, always loved horses and wanted a career at the track, but her father always tried to dissuade her.

Santa Anita: Jeranimo must face distance challenge

Benoit & Associates
Rafael Bejarano brings Jeranimo from last to first in the Grade 2 San Gabriel.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Jeranimo, spry as ever at age 8, bounced out of his victory in the Grade 2 San Gabriel Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita in good shape, leaving trainer Mike Pender contemplating where to run him next during this elongated, six-month meeting.

“He was just like his old self, like he didn’t run,” Pender said. “He dived into his feed tub, destroyed his hay net, and said thanks for the mile-and-an-eighth workout in 1:46.”

Jeranimo once used to stalk the leaders, but as he has aged, he’s become accustomed to dropping out of it and making one run.

Mighty Brown is now 2 for 2 over the Tampa Bay surface.

OLDSMAR, Fla. – Jockeys come and they go, and Ronnie Allen Jr. just keeps on winning.

The jockey colony, which has been in a constant state of flux since near the beginning of the meeting, will change yet again this week when Jesus Castanon returns to Tampa Bay Downs.

A former leading rider here, Castanon will begin taking mounts here Friday, according to agent Donald Cespedes. Cespedes was the agent for Fernando De La Cruz, who went down in a spill on Dec. 27 after having won 23 races since the meeting started Dec. 4.
