Gulfstream Park: Mott eyes big weekend

Tom Keyser
Amira's Prince, who finished third in the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap on Feb. 9 for trainer Bill Mott, most likely will start in Saturday's Grade 2 Pan American at Gulfstream.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – While trainer Bill Mott won’t be participating in the $1 million Florida Derby, he will still be well represented in many of the undercard stakes on Saturday’s program.

Mott plans to send out America in the Grade 2, $300,000 Gulfstream Oaks; Amira’s Prince in the Grade 2, $200,000 Pan American; Tetradrachm in the Grade 3, $100,000 Appleton; and maybe Clearbrook in the Grade 3, $150,000 Orchid.

Calder: Garcia back on Ring Weekend for Calder Derby

Barbara D. Livingston
Ring Weekend, shown with Alan Garcia after the gelding's maiden win on Feb. 8 at Gulfstream, will have that rider back in the irons for the Calder Derby next month.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Alan Garcia will regain the mount on Tampa Bay Derby winner Ring Weekend for the Calder Derby on April 5, trainer Graham Motion said Tuesday.

Garcia had ridden Ring Weekend in his two starts prior to the Tampa Bay Derby, but missed that race owing to a commitment that weekend in Saudi Arabia. Daniel Centeno subbed for Garcia in the Tampa Bay Derby.

Fair Grounds: Bradester needs a new rider for New Orleans Handicap

Lou Hodges Jr./Hodges Photography
Trainer Eddie Kenneally is unsure who will ride Mineshaft Handicap winner Bradester in Saturday's New Orleans Handicap.

Bradester’s running lines are a throwback to an earlier era, when horsemen made full use of allowance conditions before throwing a horse into stakes competition. Bradester always has run well, compiling a record of 4-3-1 from 9 starts, but only two of those starts have come in stakes competition: Bradester finished second last fall in the Indiana Derby, and last month won the Mineshaft Handicap by 1 3/4 lengths.

The six-furlong race at Oaklawn on April 10 would be the horse’s first since he ran a bold third last November in the $1.5 million Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

“Right now, I’d he say he’s more of a prospect for the Count Fleet than he is to miss it,” said Ron Moquett, who trains Gentlemen’s Bet for Harry Rosenblum.
