LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Dance With Fate, who finished a creditable sixth in the Kentucky Derby, was to head back to California on Monday, possibly for a break before his next start.

Dance With Fate emerged from a roughly run Derby in good order, with groom Francisco Tabuyo only pointing to a small nick on one of the colt’s hind legs as evidence of the trip. Dance With Fate was shuffled around on the first turn, and then bumped later in the race.

LOUSIVILLE, Ky. - Derby winner California Chrome will be flown to Maryland next Monday, May 12, after trainer Art Sherman asked to send the colt on a flight from Louisville to Maryland earlier than the traditional Wednesday before the race.

Buddy Fife, the Louisville-based booking agent for the Tex Sutton Forwarding Co., said Monday that the equine charter-flight company is firming up plans to have two flights.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Goldencents, the winner of the Santa Anita Derby and Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile in 2013, worked seven furlongs from the gate in 1:21.97 between races Sunday at Santa Anita, preparing for his 2014 debut in the $1.5 million Metropolitan Mile Handicap at Belmont Park on June 7.

Trainer Doug O’Neill said the brisk workout was designed as a prep race. O’Neill said he would have preferred an allowance race for Goldencents but that a suitable race did not fill. Goldencents has not started since finishing seventh in the Grade 1 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct last November.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Fury Kapcori, who won his fourth consecutive race in Saturday’s Grade 3 Precisionist Stakes, is likely to have two more starts at the current spring-summer meeting at Santa Anita.

A 4-year-old, Fury Kapcori is expected to run in the $200,000 Californian Stakes over 1 1/8 miles May 31 and the $500,000 Gold Cup at Santa Anita on June 28, according to Dan Ward, assistant to trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.

“It’s working well to go once a month,” Ward said. “You don’t have to train him too hard.”

ARCADIA, Calif. – Prominent New York owner Mike Repole is branching out to the West Coast.

On Saturday, Repole claimed Trelawny, the runner-up in the ninth race at Santa Anita, for $40,000 through trainer Michael McCarthy. Trelawny is expected to stay in California.

“It will the first time he’s had a horse in training in California,” McCarthy said Sunday.

Trelawny was beaten a nose by Avare in the optional claimer over a mile on turf.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Fury Kapcori extended his winning streak to four races, and won his first graded stakes, in Saturday’s Grade 3, $100,000 Precisionist Stakes for older horses at Santa Anita.

Fury Kapcori ($2.80) was in command throughout the Precisionist Stakes over 1 1/16 miles. Jockey Rafael Bejarano had Fury Kapcori in front by a length on the backstretch, and that was the closest his five rivals got to him.

Fury Kapcori led by two lengths on the turn and three lengths with a furlong remaining. He won by 5 3/4 lengths in 1:42.11.

LOUISVILLE, Ky.- Jockey Victor Espinoza said that when he was a youngster growing up in Mexico, he was afraid of horses.

“Look at me now, I’ve won two Kentucky Derbies,” Espinoza said after winning the Derby on Saturday aboard the 5-2 favorite California Chrome, a horse he’s ridden to five consecutive victories for 77-year-old trainer Art Sherman.

Espinoza, who turns 42 later this month, won his first Kentucky Derby aboard longshot War Emblem for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert in 2002.

So confident that his brother, Victor, was going to win Saturday’s 140th Kentucky Derby aboard California Chrome, Jose made plans late Friday night to attend the Derby, a race he rode in for the first – and last – time last year.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – For the second straight year, trainer Dallas Stewart was second to one in the Kentucky Derby.

One year after finishing second to the favored Orb with 34-1 shot Golden Soul, Stewart was again second-best to the favorite, this time with 37-1 Commanding Curve, whose furious late rally in the stretch Saturday fell 1 3/4 lengths short of California Chrome in Kentucky Derby 140 at Churchill Downs.
