Room Service breezes for possible Oaks start

Barbara D. Livingston
Room Service (outside) works in company with Aurelia's Belle on Thursday at Churchll Downs.

Room Service remains a consideration for the 140th Kentucky Oaks after having a team breeze Thursday at Churchill with her Wayne Catalano-trained stablemate, Aurelia’s Belle. Shaun Bridgmohan was aboard Room Service, who went seven furlongs in 1:28.60.

Having demurred for days, Catalano said afterward he was not ready to decide whether to run Room Service in the Grade 1, $1 million Oaks next Friday, May 2. Room Service, most recently a dead-heat winner of the Grade 1 Ashland over the Keeneland Polytrack for owners Gary and Mary West, has never raced on dirt.

California Chrome gets schooled at Los Alamitos

Scott Martinez/Los Alamitos
California Chrome, here working last week at Los Alamitos, was schooled in the starting gate on Thursday.

CYPRESS, Calif. – California Chrome jogged and galloped nearly two miles and was schooled in the starting gate at Los Alamitos on Thursday.

During a 15-minute span in which he had the track to himself, California Chrome was jogged to the gate, where he stood briefly. Trainer Art Sherman said California Chrome has been schooled in the starting gate two or three times a week since his win in the Santa Anita Derby on April 5.

Elliott returns with hot hand 10 years after Derby win

Barbara D. Livingston
After a strong Keeneland meet, rider Stewart Elliot will return to Churchill downs, 10 years after winning the Kentucky Derby aboard Smarty Jones.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Stewart Elliott had no great expectations about coming back to Kentucky. He’d probably get to ride a few, enjoy the sights of springtime and the festive crowds, sign some memorabilia, and maybe even bask in the nostalgia of his career pinnacle.

“Sure doesn’t seem like 10 years,” said Elliott.

Collmus excited to begin announcing at Churchill

Jerry Dzierwinski/Maryland Jockey Club
Larry Collmus will add yet another feather to his cap when taking over at Churchill Downs on Saturday night as the seventh announcer in track history.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – As a teenager in Maryland, Larry Collmus knew he only wanted to do one thing for a living: call horse races. He would amble around the press boxes of Pimlico and Laurel, mimicking callers such as Jack Lamar, Jack Salter, Ross Morton, Costy Caras, and many more.

“That was a long time ago,” said Collmus, 47, “although I do still walk around doing those imitations for no one in particular.”

Change is in the air as Churchill Downs opens spring meet

Barbara D. Livingston
The new video board at Churchill Downs will be among the biggest changes when the track opens its spring meet Saturday.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The folks who were here in 1875 probably wouldn’t recognize Churchill Downs anymore. Not only were their beloved Twin Spires dwarfed by a massive remodeling almost 10 years ago, but lights have been installed, including some on the inner perimeter of a turf course, no less.

Coltimus Prime mostly likely will target the $1 million Queen's Plate on July 6 at Woodbine.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Justin Nixon appears to have a serious prospect for the $1 million Queen’s Plate on July 6 at Woodbine with Coltimus Prime, who is exiting a fifth-place finish in the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland.

Coltimus Prime wintered at Palm Beach Downs after finishing a close second here in the Dec. 8 Display Stakes but was awful when he came off the sidelines March 8 in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby.

Social Inclusion breezes for possible Derby bid

Tom Keyser
Social Inclusion is unbeaten in two starts but has no Kentucky Derby points. He needs to finish first or second in the Wood to guarantee himself a spot in the Derby starting gate.

Social Inclusion, currently 24th on the points list and running out of time in his quest to qualify for the Kentucky Derby field, worked three furlongs in 34.41 seconds and galloped out a half-mile in 47.63 Thursday morning at Gulfstream Park. Elvis Trujillo breezed Social Inclusion for trainer Manny Azpurua, but regular rider Luis Contreras will be aboard if he runs in the Derby.

Grace Hall targets Ruffian as comeback spot

Barbara D. Livingston
Grace Hall (left) could make her first start since moving to Bill Mott's barn in the May 11 Ruffian Handicap at Belmont.

The Grade 1 winner Grace Hall, now with trainer Bill Mott, is being pointed to the Grade 2, $250,000 Ruffian Handicap at Belmont on May 11.

Grace Hall, the winner of the Grade 1 Spinaway at Saratoga in 2011 when in the barn of Tony Dutrow, hasn’t raced since she finished last as the even-money favorite in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park in April 2013. She came out of that race with a fracture to the coffin bone in her right front foot.

Kentucky Derby workouts: Hoppertunity likes track

[bc_video_id:322143:]LOUISVILLE, KY. – The temperature may have dropped overnight but the tempo picked up appreciably on Wednesday when it came to meaningful activity from the steadily growing contingent of horses on the grounds here at Churchill Downs preparing for next Saturday’s Kentucky Derby.
