Californians extend their stay in New York

ELMONT, N.Y. – Regardless of how Goldencents fares in Saturday’s Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park, his connections won’t be in a rush to get back to California.

On Sunday, owner Glenn Sorgenstein and trainer Doug O’Neill will be represented in two allowance races on Belmont Park’s nine-race card.

Tom Keyser
Jockey Joe Johnson was suspended three days on Saturday for his winning ride the previous day in the Apple Blossom Handicap.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The horses were loading into the gate for the final race Thursday, with Joe Johnson aboard favored Silver Antelope and shooting for his 1,000th victory. Little did he know he had to overcome a jinx to reach his milestone.

John Asher, vice president of racing communications for Churchill Downs, was watching the race in the press box, already holding signage that congratulated Johnson on his 1,000th win – which is the bad-karma equivalent to an owner watching a race from the winner’s circle.

Tom’s Tribute equaled Wise Dan’s 2012 Santa Anita course record for a mile on grass when he zoomed from the back of the field to win the Thunder Road Stakes in 1:31.78 on April 6. The win gave trainer Jim Cassidy a clear idea of how he wanted to campaign Tom’s Tribute through the summer.

“Rather than jar him up with a race every three or four weeks, I’d like to save him for the end of the year,” Cassidy said.
