Social Inclusion breezes for possible Derby bid

Tom Keyser
Social Inclusion is unbeaten in two starts but has no Kentucky Derby points. He needs to finish first or second in the Wood to guarantee himself a spot in the Derby starting gate.

Social Inclusion, currently 24th on the points list and running out of time in his quest to qualify for the Kentucky Derby field, worked three furlongs in 34.41 seconds and galloped out a half-mile in 47.63 Thursday morning at Gulfstream Park. Elvis Trujillo breezed Social Inclusion for trainer Manny Azpurua, but regular rider Luis Contreras will be aboard if he runs in the Derby.

Grace Hall targets Ruffian as comeback spot

Barbara D. Livingston
Grace Hall (left) could make her first start since moving to Bill Mott's barn in the May 11 Ruffian Handicap at Belmont.

The Grade 1 winner Grace Hall, now with trainer Bill Mott, is being pointed to the Grade 2, $250,000 Ruffian Handicap at Belmont on May 11.

Grace Hall, the winner of the Grade 1 Spinaway at Saratoga in 2011 when in the barn of Tony Dutrow, hasn’t raced since she finished last as the even-money favorite in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park in April 2013. She came out of that race with a fracture to the coffin bone in her right front foot.

Leparoux has commanding lead in jockey standings

Barbara D. Livingston
Julien Leparoux led all riders at Del Mar with seven stakes wins.

Whether it’s Saratoga, or Gulfstream, or Southern California, Julien Leparoux typically has been a mid-top-10 kind of jockey in recent years.

But for some reason, when it’s Keeneland, look out – Leparoux is hard to top. For the 10th time since the 2006 spring meet, Leparoux will have won or shared the riding title when the 15-day Keeneland meet ends Friday. Into the final three days, Leparoux held a commanding lead atop the standings.

Higher-level races worth more at Santa Anita meeting

ARCADIA, Calif. – Purses for the spring-summer meeting at Santa Anita that begins Friday are unchanged from the winter-spring meeting that ended last weekend but vary from purses for the corresponding dates run at Hollywood Park last year.

Purses for maiden special weight and allowance races are higher than at Hollywood Park, while purses for some claiming races are the same or lower.

Wise Dan ready for Woodford Reserve Turf Classic

Keeneland/Coady Photography
Wise Dan, the two-time defending Horse of the Year, began his 7-year-old season Friday with a win in the Maker's 46 Mile at Keeneland.

Wise Dan is ready. Now all Churchill has to do is round up some opposition for the reigning two-time Horse of the Year in the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic, the race before the Derby on the May 3 card.

In what will be his only workout between races, Wise Dan breezed a half-mile in 47.60 seconds Monday over the Keeneland Polytrack. The 7-year-old gelding won the April 11 Maker’s 46 Mile for his 11th victory in his last 12 starts.

“I just wanted a good workout for him just to keep him kicking over,” said trainer Charlie LoPresti.

Beholder earns one-week vacation

Benoit & Associates
Beholder romped in the Santa Lucia last Sunday in her first start of the year.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Beholder, the two-time champion who won her 2014 debut in the Santa Lucia Stakes at Santa Anita last Sunday, is being given a weeklong vacation at a local farm, trainer Richard Mandella said.

Mandella said Beholder has been sent to Julie Adair’s Southern California farm for a week of rest and is expected to return to his stable in the Santa Anita barn area next week. The break will not disrupt plans to start Beholder in the $1 million Ogden Phipps Stakes at Belmont Park on June 7, he said.
