Preakness: Pimentel to ride Kid Cruz

Jim McCue/Maryland Jockey Club
Based on his impressive last-to-first move in the Private Terms at Laurel, Kid Cruz could make an impact in stakes for 3-year-olds sometime this spring.

Julian Pimentel, who has ridden Kid Cruz to a pair of minor stakes victories, will keep the mount aboard the colt for the $1.5 million Preakness Stakes, trainer Linda Rice confirmed Wednesday.

“Frankly, he knows the horse; he’s run well for him. I like the fact he’s riding that track,” said Rice, who will be making her Preakness debut.

Rice also mentioned that when her owners, Steven Brandt and Richard Boylan, decided to allow Black Swan Stable – from which they claimed Kid Cruz – to buy back into the horse, it was “good karma. I feel the same way about Pimentel.”

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – In a full field of 12 fillies and mares, a lot could have gone wrong for Silent Treat, who started from the rail in last Saturday’s $126,600 Ballade Stakes at Woodbine. But luckily for trainer Scott Fairlie, he was able to describe Silent Treat’s trip as “uneventful” after the race.

“She went right to the lead; it was good,” he said. “She’s the kind of filly that’s going to give you everything she’s got.”

Sea Mona, Desert Steel look like runners in debuts

ARCADIA, Calif. – The 2-year-old filly Sea Mona will start her career in a 4 1/2-furlong maiden race at Santa Anita on Thursday with high expectations from trainer Adam Kitchingman.

Sea Mona is a half-sister to Let Em Shine, who won the Came Home Stakes for Kitchingman at Hollywood Park last year. Sea Mona, who breaks from the rail in a field of eight, might be just as good, her trainer said.

“She’s training excellent,” Kitchingman said. “I couldn’t be happier with her. I think she’ll like the inside post as long as she breaks. She’s good at the gate.”
