Wicked Strong, with jockey Rajiv Maragh, stamps himself a strong contender for the Travers by drawing off to win the Jim Dandy by 2 1/4 lengths.

2-year-old euthanized at Del Mar; fifth death since Friday

DEL MAR, Calif. – Chilled Mousse, an unraced 2-year-old colt, became the fifth horse to die at Del Mar since Friday when he suffered fatal injuries following a four-furlong workout on Polytrack on Sunday morning.

Chilled Mousse was timed in 50.20 seconds for what was to be his final drill for a scheduled debut on Friday, but his injuries were so grave that he had to be euthanized, according to his trainer, Peter Miller.

“You try to do everything right – work right after the break, put on a light rider - and still it happens,” Miller said Sunday morning.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Trainer Eric Guillot is never one to be at a loss for words, but when asked what he thought about Moreno’s lone work in preparation for next Saturday’s Grade 1 Whitney, he simply said, “I thought it was good.”

After which, he just couldn’t contain himself any longer.

“I think after the Whitney, [the New York Racing Association] should put up half a million [dollars] and make a match race between Moreno and Palace Malice at 8:45 in the morning,” Guillot said with a laugh. “There isn’t a horse in the country that’s going to outwork this horse.”
