Molly Morgan, winner of last weekend's Grade 3 Gardenia, will make her next start in the Grade 1 Spinster at Keeneland on Oct. 5.

Molly Morgan, the winner of the Grade 3 Gardenia at Ellis Park last Saturday, is being pointed for the Grade 1 Spinster at Keeneland on Oct. 5, trainer Dale Romans said Wednesday.

The Spinster, a Win and You’re In prep race for the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita on Oct. 31, is among the most prestigious races for fillies and mares in Kentucky and could reveal whether she fits in the Breeders’ Cup. This fall, the Spinster will be contested on Keeneland’s new dirt track, which is being laid down this summer, replacing its synthetic Polytrack surface.

Gulfstream Park, Golden Gate’s sister track in Florida, unveiled the wager at its meet earlier this year, and the Oak Tree at Pleasanton meet also offered the wager. The Golden Pick 6, offered daily on the final six races on the card, is a jackpot-style wager paid out if there is only one winning ticket with all six winners.

Barbara D. Livingston
Tourist wins the Sir Cat Stakes on July 18 at Saratoga.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – The first time Bill Mott won Arlington’s Secretariat Stakes, the race was at Hawthorne.

It was 1985, the summer the Arlington grandstand burned to the ground. Mott, then 32, was in his sixth year as a head trainer, and he had his string stabled in Chicago.

“We shipped over to Hawthorne to run,” Mott said. “I think we might have had a few stalls over there, too.”

String King outruns pedigree, points to Unbridled

Lynn Roberts/Hodges Photography
Earlier this month, String King won the eighth stakes of his career in the off-the-turf, $75,000 Louisiana Cup Turf Classic at Louisiana Downs.

At first glance, String King might seem to be of humble bloodlines as the son of a $1,500 stallion and a mare who won her maiden for a claiming price of $15,000. But dig a little deeper and his pedigree taps into one of the great dynasties of the turf.

Somali Lemonade finds success after changing style

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Rare is the racehorse whose running style switches from one extreme to the other.

Rarer still is one to make such a transformation at the Grade 1 level, but that’s exactly what has occurred with Somali Lemonade, a former come-from-behinder who is now a grinder – and a far greater success – on the front end.
