Majestic Harbor, the winner of the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita last June, worked a half-mile in 47.40 seconds at Santa Anita on Sunday.

The exercise brought back memories of the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 1 for owner Ron Beegle, and not necessarily favorable ones.

“He worked better than he ran in the Breeders’ Cup,” Beegle said.

Five months after he returned to California from his native Brazil, trainer Paulo Lobo is forming a stable that could be prominent in stakes in 2015.

Saturday at Los Alamitos, Lobo won an optional claimer over 1 1/16 miles with Baccelo, a Group 1 stakes winner in Brazil in 2013. Over the weekend, the stable grew with the arrivals of Alakazan Alakazan, Lady Zuzu, and Macro Access, Lobo said.

ARCADIA, Calif.- Cozmic One, the first foal produced by 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta, may have his career debut at Santa Anita in January or February.

Sunday, Cozmic One had his first workout in California, going five furlongs in 1:04.20 at Santa Anita. Jockey Victor Espinoza was aboard Cozmic One, who was not urged while working alone.

Awesome Baby, Stonetastic and Taris, three leading contenders for the $300,000 La Brea Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Santa Anita next Friday, worked at Santa Anita on Saturday.

Awesome Baby, unraced since winning the Sunland Park Oaks in New Mexico in March, worked five furlongs in 58.80 seconds. Trained by Bob Baffert for Kaleem Shah, Awesome Baby won two stakes at the 2013-14 Santa Anita winter-spring meeting – the Grade 2 Santa Ynez Stakes over 6 1/2 furlongs in January, and the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel Stakes over 1 1/16 miles in March.

Beholder, the two-time champion who missed the Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Oct. 31 because of illness, has resumed training for a 2015 season.

Owned by B. Wayne Hughes, Beholder was briefly at trainer Richard Mandella’s stable at Santa Anita on Friday and early Saturday, long enough to undergo precautionary X-rays on her lungs. Mandella said on Saturday that the X-rays were “perfect.”

Saturday morning, Beholder was sent to Julie Adair-Stack’s farm in Chino, Calif., where she will undergo preliminary training for a few weeks before rejoining Mandella’s stable at Santa Anita.

Texas Red, the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita on Nov. 1, worked a half-mile in 51.40 seconds at Santa Anita on Saturday, his first major exercise since a return to serious training earlier this month.

Trained by Keith Desormeaux, Texas Red will be based in Southern California this winter. Desormeaux has mentioned the $200,000 San Vicente Stakes for 3-year-olds over seven furlongs at Santa Anita on Feb. 1 as a potential comeback race.

Desormeaux said he was not expecting a quick workout from Texas Red on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Home Run Kitten provided one of the highlights of 2014 for trainer David Hofmans when the 3-year-old scored a dramatic come-from-behind win in the Grade 3 Eddie D Stakes on the Santa Anita hillside turf course in September.

When Home Run Kitten runs in the $200,000 Mathis Brothers Mile on turf on Dec. 26, Hofmans is hoping the colt can provide a fast start to the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting for his stable.

“Hopefully, we’ll have a better 2015 than 2014,” Hofmans said. “I’ve rested horses and we’re coming in fresh.”

ARCADIA, Calif. – Bayern, the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita Park on Nov. 1, zoomed a half-mile in 46.20 seconds when working at Santa Anita on Friday.

The workout under jockey Martin Garcia was only the second for Bayern since he returned to serious training after a break in November. The time of the exercise caught trainer Bob Baffert by surprise.

“Whoa!” Baffert said after glancing at his stopwatch.

Jockey Forest Boyce, who made a last-minute decision to ride this season at Fair Grounds instead of staying home in Maryland to ride at Laurel, said she’s enjoying the track and the city.

“It’s real nice,” Boyce said. “Everyone’s been really helpful. … It was nice to be able to go somewhere, try something new.”
