Who will ride Main Sequence in Breeders' Cup Turf?

Tom Keyser
Rajiv Maragh broke his arm one race after winning the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic aboard Main Sequence.

ELMONT, N.Y. - In Main Sequence, trainer Graham Motion has a top-flight contender for the $3 million Breeders’ Cup Turf. Unfortunately, it appears as though he will need a new rider for his three-time Grade 1 winning colt.

One race after Main Sequence won Saturday’s $600,000 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at Belmont Park, his rider, Rajiv Maragh, went down in the Jockey Club Gold Cup and suffered a broken right arm. Maragh underwent surgery on Sunday, but it is highly unlikely the 29-year-old rider will  be able to make it back in five weeks.

Wicked Strong may take rest of year off

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Jimmy Jerkens says he favors giving Wicked Strong a vacation until next season.

Wicked Strong, who clipped heels with Moreno and unseated jockey Rajiv Maragh during the running of Saturday’s $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park, came out of the race in good order, but may not run again this year, according to trainer Jimmy Jerkens.

"There's a chance we might give Wicked the rest of the year off,” Jerkens told the New York Racing Association publicity department. “He's okay and everything, but he's grinded it out pretty good and we hope to have a nice handicap horse next year."

Shared Belief will train more lightly toward Breeders' Cup

Shigeki Kikkawa
Shared Belief traveled about 66 feet more than runner-up Fed Biz in the Awesome Again, earning a 101 Beyer Speed Figure.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Shared Belief emerged in good condition from his eventful, winning journey in the Awesome Again Stakes on Saturday, but his trainer and co-owner, Jerry Hollendorfer, on Sunday morning at Santa Anita said the hard race would likely cause him to train Shared Belief differently than anticipated prior to his next start, the Breeders’ Cup Classic here on Nov. 1.

“I guess a good, hard race isn’t ideal, but I won’t have to train him as hard as I normally do,” Hollendorfer said.

Delgado finds success in U.S.

Trainer Gustavo Delgado’s first venture into racing in the United States certainly has been an unequivocal success. With less than two weeks to go in the meet, Delgado sits atop the standings, with Kirk Ziadie and David Fawkes as his two closest pursuers.

Delgado came to the U.S. at the behest of jockeys Javier Castellano and Junior Alvarado, who began their riding careers in Venezuela before moving on to even greater success in this country.

Two of California’s leading turf milers – Obviously and Tom’s Tribute – will pass the $200,000 City of Hope Mile on Oct. 4 and be trained to the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Mile, their trainers said on Friday.

Tom’s Tribute, trained by Jim Cassidy, won two stakes at Del Mar – the Grade 1 Eddie Read Stakes over 1 1/8 miles on turf on July 20 and the Grade 2 Del Mar Mile on Aug. 24.
