Mischief Clem won his first stakes in the California Cup Derby, a race won in 2014 by California Chrome.

California Chrome won the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes at 1 1/16 miles in his next start, and the same $400,000 race on March 7 has been the subject of preliminary discussions between owner Craig Griffin and trainer Bob Hess Jr. for Mischief Clem.

“That would be tough,” Hess said. “The timing is good.”

Mischief Clem has won 3 of 6 starts and earned $366,380 for Griffin and his wife, Lorie.

The 4-year-old was scheduled to leave Santa Anita for trainer Blaine Wright’s stable at Golden Gate Fields on Monday. Michael Amoruso
El Kabeir won the Jerome on Jan. 3 and continues down the Derby trail in the Withers on Feb. 7.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Dodging one storm that canceled training here Saturday and avoiding a second storm that will likely cancel training here on Tuesday, El Kabeir managed to get in an important five-furlong workout Sunday morning in preparation for the Grade 3 Withers Stakes at Aqueduct on Feb. 7.

Working shortly after 9:30 a.m. on a freshly harrowed Belmont Park training track that would likely be termed “good,” El Kabeir breezed a solid five furlongs in 1:01.47, getting his final quarter in 23.72 seconds. He galloped out six furlongs in 1:14.86 under exercise rider Simon Harris.

California Chrome impresses clocker in mile workout

Benoit & Associates
California Chrome will make his turf debut Saturday in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby at Del Mar.

CYPRESS, Calif. – California Chrome worked a mile in 1:41.40 at Los Alamitos on Sunday. The work was designated by track clockers as breezing, which is a rarity in Southern California. The designation means that California Chrome worked under minimal urging from jockey Victor Espinoza.

The 2014 Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old, California Chrome had his longest workout of the year on Sunday, and his second-to-last workout before a scheduled start in the $500,000 San Antonio Stakes at Santa Anita on Feb. 7.

Firing Line works toward Robert Lewis Stakes

ARCADIA, Calif. – Firing Line, second Dec. 20 in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity, worked five furlongs in 1:00.60 Saturday.

Owned by Arnold Zetcher and trained by Simon Callaghan, Firing Line is a candidate for the $150,000 Robert Lewis Stakes at 1 1/16 miles Feb. 7.

The workout was slower than a five-furlong clocking by Firing Line in 59.80 seconds Jan. 17, which Callaghan said was by design.

“He went strongly the week before so went a little on the easy side,” Callaghan said. “He was nice and relaxed, and that’s the main thing.”
