Acceptance takes break to heal sore shins

Acceptance wins the King Glorious on Sunday to remain unbeaten in three starts.

Acceptance, who won his first three starts, including the King Glorious Stakes at Los Alamitos in December, has been turned out after finishing fourth in the California Cup Derby at Santa Anita on Jan. 24.

The 3-year-old Acceptance will be rested at owner Bud Johnston’s Old English Rancho in Sanger, Calif., according to Kenny Black, assistant to trainer Don Warren.

“He’ll be freshened to deal with some shin issues,” Black told Santa Anita publicity.

Alert Bay gets a freshening

ARCADIA, Calif. - Alert Bay is getting a vacation.

The winner of five consecutive races, all stakes, Alert Bay will have a 60-day break at a Northern California farm before returning for the second half of the year, trainer Blaine Wright said on Friday.

Alert Bay has won two stakes at the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting – the Grade 2 Mathis Brothers Mile for 3-year-olds on turf on Dec. 26, and the $250,000 California Cup Turf Classic against statebreds at 1 1/8 miles on Jan. 24.

Don't Tell Sophia will skip Bayakoa

Don't Tell Sophia could run at Oaklawn in the Grade 2 Azareri on March 14 or the Grade 1 Apple Blossom on April 10.

Don’t Tell Sophia, one of the top older females in North America, will not run in the Grade 3, $100,000 Bayakoa at Oaklawn on Feb. 15, as had been a goal, her co-owner and trainer, Phil Sims, said Wednesday.

“She’s at Keeneland,” Sims said. “I’m not in a hurry right now. It’s a long year, and our ultimate goal is in the fall.”

Sims said his primary objective for Don’t Tell Sophia is a return trip to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff.

“It’s at Keeneland, our home track,” said Sims.

Talamo picks up mount on War Story for Southwest

Southern California-based jockey Joe Talamo will ride War Story in the Grade 3, $300,000 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn on Feb. 16, the horse’s co-owner, Ron Paolucci, said Thursday. War Story will enter the race off a runner-up finish in the Grade 3 Lecomte at his base of Fair Grounds.

Talamo takes over from James Graham in a move Paolucci said was his call and no reflection on Graham, who was aboard for the horse’s maiden win and the Lecomte.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Jockey Ramon Vazquez has jumped out to a fast start at Oaklawn Park, where a recent five-win day has helped lift the Puerto Rico native to the top of the riding charts.

Vazquez, 31, is looking to build on the standout season he closed out at Remington Park on Dec. 14. The rider collected his second straight title at the Oklahoma City track with 90 wins from 435 mounts and accounted for his richest stateside victory in the $250,000 Springboard Mile.

Apprentice jockey Nicolas suspended

Apprentice jockey Gonzalo Nicolas has been suspended three days for causing interference in the fourth race Feb. 1.

Nicolas, 24, was cited for his ride on Master Master, who finished sixth in a maiden claimer at six furlongs after setting the early pace. Master Master bumped with the eventual fifth-place finisher Warren’s Sunny Boy in the stretch.

Hoop of Colour wins U.S. debut in optional claimer

Hoop of Colour, a two-time winner in England in 2014, won her American debut Thursday in an optional claimer at 1 1/4 miles on turf.

The win left trainer Graham Motion contemplating a stakes appearance for Hoop of Colour in coming months. One possibility is the $200,000 Santa Ana Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf March 15.

“I think it’s something to consider,” Motion said. “It would be a big step.”

Conquest Two Step, who won the Grade 2 Palos Verdes Stakes at six furlongs Jan. 31, is a candidate for the $200,000 San Carlos Stakes at seven furlongs March 7.

Trainer Mark Casse said the additional distance will be an asset for Conquest Two Step, who races for Ernie Semersky and Dory Newell’s Conquest Stables.

Lexie Lou will miss Buena Vista with minor foot injury

The 3-year-old Canadian-bred filly Lexie Lou gets tested for class in the Grade 2 Canadian.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Lexie Lou, famous for beating males in the 2014 Queen’s Plate at Woodbine, will miss the $200,000 Buena Vista Stakes at Santa Anita on Feb. 16 after suffering a minor foot injury in January.

Trainer Mark Casse said Lexie Lou has been plagued in the past by a foot abscess. The 4-year-old filly missed a few days of training after finishing second Jan. 17 in the Grade 2 La Canada Stakes, Casse said. Lexis Lou currently is in light training.
