Velasquez taking a few extra days before return

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Jockey Cornelio Velasquez was named to ride horses this week at Aqueduct but has pushed back his return for at least 10 more days, his agent, Bill Castle, said Thursday.

Velasquez, involved in a spill Dec. 5 in which he fractured his collarbone, will now return either Jan. 19 or 22. Castle said Velasquez told him he wants to get fitter before returning to ride races.

Velasquez was the third-leading rider on the New York Racing Association circuit in 2014 with 177 wins. He won the Aqueduct fall-meet riding title.

Jacobson mulls next move for stakes pair

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Big Business could run next in the Hollie Hughes at Aqueduct or the Sunshine Millions Sprint at Gulfstream.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Trainer David Jacobson has two candidates for the $100,000 Hollie Hughes here on Jan. 18, Big Business and Be Bullish, but he likely won’t run them against each other.

Big Business, the recent winner of the Alex M. Robb here at 1 1/16 miles, is a candidate to cut back to six furlongs in either the Hollie Hughes or the $100,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint on Jan. 17 at Gulfstream Park.

Formerly open only to Florida-breds, the Sunshine Millions is now also open to horses bred in New York, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.

Willet trying to go out in blaze of glory

Barbara D. Livingston
Willet won an allowance race on Wednesday and could be headed to the Grade 1 Ballerina next.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Willet may not be done racing just yet.

Following Willet’s third-place finish as the favorite in the Garland of Roses at Aqueduct on Dec. 6, trainer and part-owner Jimmy Iselin seemed to be leaning toward retiring Willet, a four-time New York-bred stakes winner.

But in the subsequent month, Iselin has been pleased with the 7-year-old mare’s training. If she continues to impress, Willet is likely to run in the $100,000 Interborough Stakes here Jan. 17.

Upstart almost ready to hit the Derby trail

Nikki Sherman
Upstart after finishing third under Jose Ortiz in the BC Juvenile. The Jan. 24 Holy Bull is a possible return spot.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – For a horse who finished second in the Champagne Stakes and was beaten a nose for second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, Upstart may be flying a bit under the radar as he prepares for his 3-year-old campaign, which will begin here later this winter. But the man who knows the horse best, trainer Rick Violette, couldn’t be more bullish on the New York-bred Upstart, who worked four furlongs in 49.10 seconds at Palm Meadows on Tuesday.

Laurel's new barns should be in use by April

Construction has begun on new stalls at Laurel Park. Under the 10-year agreement between the Maryland Jockey Club and the horsemen that was signed in 2012, the Stronach Group, owner of the MJC, agreed to build an additional 300 stalls as part of the backstretch revitalization project.

Horses in Maryland are stabled at Laurel, Pimlico, and the Bowie Training Center during the year. Once the additional stalls are completed, stabling could be consolidated to two locations.

Hoppertunity (center), winning the Grade 1 Clark Handicap, is among 11 probable starters for Saturday's San Pasqual Stakes.
