Hushion undergoes treatment for leukemia

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Trainer Mike Hushion remains in a south Florida hospital, where he is undergoing treatment for a form of leukemia.

Barry Schwartz, one of Hushion’s owners and a longtime friend, said that Hushion was up and walking about this week after undergoing a period of chemotherapy treatment.

“He’s gone through that first round of treatment, and they’re encouraged,” Schwartz said.

Schwartz said that while Hushion, 66, focuses on his treatment, he has moved some of his horses to other trainers, “but only until Mike gets better.”

Correction Stakes a challenging return spot for Mamdooha

Mamdooha hasn't raced since this victory in the Cicada about a year ago.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – When last seen on the racetrack, Mamdooha was edging away from six 3-year-old fillies en route to a 1 1/2-length victory in the $100,000 Cicada Stakes, her third consecutive stakes victory and fourth straight win overall.

That was last March 15.

Almost exactly one year later, Mamdooha will try to pick up where she left off when she makes her 4-year-old debut in Saturday’s $100,000 Correction Stakes, which, like the Cicada, is a six-furlong race run over Aqueduct’s inner track.

Vazquez enters first starters since November

Trainer Juan C. Vazquez entered his first horses since November this week. No longer welcome at the Maryland Jockey Club tracks, he now is based on a farm in Delaware.

Vazquez has served two suspensions since his last starter Nov. 15 at Laurel Park, and his trainer’s license is in good standing. He was suspended 90 days by the Delaware Racing Commission for being the aggressor in an altercation with jockey Trevor McCarthy last June. As part of his penalty, he completed a course in anger management.

Top Billing works toward allowance race

Shug McGaughey is searching for a suitable allowance race for Top Billing .

Top Billing had his first workout since a disappointing return to action when he breezed four furlongs in 49.80 seconds Tuesday at Payson Park.

Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey said last week that he hopes to find another allowance race for Top Billing in the near future. Top Billing ran fourth as the favorite in a second-level allowance race at 1 1/16 miles on Feb. 22 when making his first start in precisely a year.

Eh Cumpari will get shot in Kentucky Derby prep

Eh Cumpari (8) is under consideration for the Wood Memorial, the Blue Grass Stakes, and the Arkansas Derby.

Eh Cumpari, the last-to-first winner of the Grade 3 Palm Beach Stakes here last Saturday on turf, will be given an opportunity on the Kentucky Derby trail, said trainer Michael Dilger.

Ben Ali may be next for General a Rod

General a Rod could be headed to Keeneland for the Ben Ali Stakes on April 11.

Trainer Todd Pletcher had a big day last Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs, where he won not only the main event, the Tampa Bay Derby, with Carpe Diem, but also sent out General a Rod to register an impressive 6 3/4-length victory in the Challenger Stakes. General a Rod, who was transferred to Pletcher’s barn one month earlier, was one of only two horses to compete in all three legs of the 2014 Triple Crown. He earned a career-best 104 Beyer Speed Figure in the Challenger.

Romans expects Keen Ice to run big in Louisiana Derby

trainer Dale Romans is confident Keen Ice will move forward in the Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Nobody was running any better at the end of the Grade 2 Risen Star than Keen Ice, and trainer Dale Romans is expecting an even better performance when his top Kentucky Derby hopeful returns to Fair Grounds and stretches out another sixteenth of a mile later this month in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby.

Keen Ice turned in his first work since the Risen Star here at Gulfstream Park on Wednesday, going five furlongs from the half-mile pole in 1:00.98, with his final quarter-mile to the wire in 23.85 seconds.

James Graham, aboard Jessica's Star, has a new agent in Frank Bernis because Britt McGehee, who booked his mounts for years, is seriously ill.

James Graham should be on top of the world.

With 90 wins at this meet, he is 25 up on the second-place rider in the Fair Grounds colony, and Graham is a 1-9 favorite to win his first Fair Grounds riding title after finishing second or third in the standings the last six seasons.

Work All Week, currently in Florida, is waiting for better weather to arrive in Arkansas.

Work All Week, the champion sprinter of 2014 who is being considered for the Count Fleet, is due to arrive at Oaklawn this weekend, trainer Roger Brueggemann said. Work All Week, who in his last start won the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, was freshened after the race and has been in training at a farm in Ocala, Fla. Brueggemann, who trains the champion for Midwest Thoroughbreds, has a division at Oaklawn.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The Grade 2, $200,000 Santa Ana for older female grass runners Sunday is expected to include Rosalind and Testa Rossi, both trained by Chad Brown, who worked as an assistant in California for Bobby Frankel before going out on his own.

Rosalind was second in the Grade 3 Suwanee River at Gulfstream in her last start Feb. 7, her first race since moving to Brown’s barn. Joel Rosario has the mount.

Testa Rossi was placed first via disqualification in the Grade 3 Endeavour at Tampa Bay Downs on Jan. 31. Rafael Bejarano rides her.
