Curlin’s Fox bled in China Doll

ARCADIA, Calif. – A lack of pace appeared to compromise the chances of Curlin’s Fox when she finished second as the favorite in the China Doll Stakes on March 7, but trainer Carla Gaines said Curlin’s Fox bled in the race, too.

Highly touted before her Feb. 1 debut, Curlin’s Fox won impressively, as advertised. Thus far, she has made both her starts on turf, but she is expected to move to dirt for the Grade 1, $400,000 Santa Anita Oaks on April 4, the same card on which Gaines will run Bolo in the Grade 1, $1 million Santa Anita Derby.

Warren’s Veneda may challenge males in Charles Town Classic

Benoit & Associates
Warren's Veneda, winner of the Santa Margarita, may target the Charles Town Classic against males for her next start, according to her connections.

ARCADIA, Calif. – With the major goal of the meet safely tucked away, trainer Craig Lewis still was not sure how high to aim next with Warren’s Veneda, who scored a resounding victory last Saturday in the Grade 1 Santa Margarita Stakes, the championship race of the Santa Anita season for older females.

Lewis said it was “possible we’d go to West Virginia to run against colts in the Charles Town Classic,” but he wasn’t close to committing to that $1.5 million race on April 18.

Golden Lad earned a 102 Beyer Speed Figure for his 1 3/4-length win in the Essex Handicap in February.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Horses trained by Todd Pletcher have accounted for two of the first three races in Oaklawn Park’s handicap series. Golden Lad invaded from south Florida and took down the $100,000 Essex in February, and Race Day traveled to town last week and won the Grade 3, $250,000 Razorback. There is one more offering for the division at the meet, and Golden Lad could return for the occasion, said Pletcher.

War Story gets in some gate work

Lou Hodges Jr./Hodges Photography
Joe Talamo will ride War Story in the Louisiana Derby. Talamo will take over for Kent Desormeaux, who rode War Story (left) to this second-place finish behind International Star in the Risen Star.

War Story broke slowly when he finished second to International Star in the Lecomte and Risen Star stakes in his last two starts, and trainer Tom Amoss is trying to correct the issue before the Louisiana Derby on March 28.

On Monday, War Story broke out of the gate and ran about an eighth of a mile, a schooling session intended to improve his start.

I’m a Chatterbox sharp as ever in Oaks work

Amanda Hodges Weir/Hodges Photography
I'm a Chatterbox scored her second straight stakes win in the Rachel Alexandra.

As well as she ran in winning the Silverbulletday Stakes in January, and as strong as her performance was in capturing the Rachel Alexandra Stakes in February, I’m a Chatterbox might be even better in March. She runs next on March 28 in the Fair Grounds Oaks.

On Monday, in her first workout since she rallied from last to win the Feb. 21 Rachel Alexandra, I’m a Chatterbox zipped through a five-furlong drill in 59.20 seconds. It was the fastest of 20 works at the distance – and it was in no way intended to be fast.

Florida Derby looking like Upstart vs. Pletcher pair

Barbara D. Livingston
Materiality, ridden by John Velazquez, wins the Islamorada by 5 3/4 lengths on Friday.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Gulfstream Park racing officials are hoping to get a sizable field for the March 28 Florida Derby, although it looks like Upstart and two Todd Pletcher horses will tower over an otherwise undistinguished group of 3-year-olds.

Gulfstream vice president of racing P.J. Campo said he is looking for at least eight horses, and “hopefully a couple more,” to run in the Grade 1, $1 million Florida Derby, which helps kick off the final round of Kentucky Derby preps worth 100 eligibility points to the winner.
