California Chrome returns to Los Alamitos base

Four-Footed Fotos
California Chrome will spend the rest of the year at trainer Art Sherman's Los Alamitos base.

CYPRESS, Calif. – After stops in Dubai, England, Illinois, and Kentucky, California Chrome returned to trainer Art Sherman’s stable at Los Alamitos on Tuesday for the first time in nearly seven months.

He will not be going far for a while.

On Wednesday, California Chrome was tack-walked at Sherman’s barn, his first day of exercise designed to have him ready for a return to racing in early 2016. Sherman has the San Pasqual Handicap at Santa Anita on Jan. 9 as an early target.

“We’re kind of looking that way,” he said.

Charitable Annuity wins the West Virginia Breeders' Classic on Oct. 10 at Charles Town.

There may have been a passing of the torch at Charles Town last Saturday night when the 3-year-old Charitable Annuity finished strongly to win the $450,000 West Virginia Breeders’ Classic while the 9-year-old Russell Road backed up in the final three furlongs of the 1 1/8-mile race to finish ninth.

Both Russell Road and Charitable Annuity are owned by Mark Russell and trained by James W. Casey.

Out of retirement, Not Abroad will start in Maryland Million Classic

Tom Keyser
Not Abroad recently made his return to the track after a three-year absence. He is scheduled to start in Saturday's Maryland Million Classic at Laurel.

One of the more interesting horses on the Maryland Million card at Laurel Park on Saturday is Not Abroad, an 8-year-old who will run in the $150,000 Classic.

Not Abroad won the Classic in 2012, which encouraged his connections to run him in the Breeders’ Cup Marathon at Santa Anita. He bowed a tendon while finishing fifth in that race and soon afterward was reacquired by one of his breeders, Tom Bowman, and his children, Rebecca Davis and Brooke Bowman.

They bred Not Abroad to some mares, used him as a teaser, and finally turned him out.

Mohaymen works fast for Nashua

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Mohaymen wins a maiden race at Belmont Park in his debut.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Mohaymen, a first-out winner for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, went four furlongs in 46.52 seconds on Wednesday in preparation for the Grade 2, $200,000 Nashua at Aqueduct on Nov. 4.

Mohaymen, a son of Tapit who brought $2.2 million as a yearling, went his first quarter in 23.13 seconds and his second quarter in 23.39. He galloped out five furlongs in 59.80.

“Obviously, it was a little faster than we anticipated or wanted, but maybe the track was a little faster today,” McLaughlin said. “I like the way he did it – just sitting on him, didn’t ask.”

El Kabeir smokes six furlongs in work

Debra A. Roma
El Kabeir, who was scratched from the Kentucky Derby, will get a break at KESMARC in Versailles, Ky.

ELMONT, N.Y. – El Kabeir, the leading 3-year-old around these parts during the winter, tuned up for his return to the races with a very fast six-furlong workout in 1:10.99 on Wednesday over the Belmont Park main track.

El Kabeir worked right after the midmorning renovation break under exercise rider Simon Harris. El Kabeir, breaking off from the five-furlong pole, went his first quarter in 23.99 seconds, three furlongs in 35.38, and hit the finish line in 58.88. He went an additional furlong in 12.11 seconds before galloping out seven furlongs in 1:24.80 and a mile in 1:38.91.

Ready Dancer among six entered for Futurity

Justin N. Lane
Adding blinkers after losses in his first two starts, Ready Dancer broke his maiden with a 2 1/2-length win on Travers Day.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Ready Dancer, who finished last in the Grade 1 Champagne on Oct. 3, was one of six horses entered Wednesday for Saturday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Futurity at Belmont Park.

Trainer Todd Pletcher said he “is not committed to run” in the six-furlong Futurity, and that Ready Dancer didn’t handle the sloppy track in the Champagne.

“Twenty yards into the race, you could tell he hated the racetrack,” Pletcher said.

Tango Time ends up in stakes after all

Barbara D. Livingston
Lady Lara wins the Honey Fox Stakes by a neck Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Todd Pletcher tried to play it conservatively with the filly Tango Time, entering her back in a second-level allowance race – rather than a stakes – off an eye-catching first-level allowance win at Saratoga. But when rain forced the allowance race off the turf Sept. 30, Pletcher was left with little choice.

Thus, Tango Time was one of 13 fillies and mares entered Wednesday to run in Saturday’s Grade 3, $200,000 Athenia Stakes at 1 1/16 miles at Belmont Park.

Bar of Gold flees nemesis by going in Raven Run

Barbara D. Livingston
Bar of Gold figures as a prime contender in Saturday's Raven Run for 3-year-old fillies.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – John Kimmel has seen enough of Cavorting for now.

One of Kimmel’s stable stars, Bar of Gold, spent the summer giving futile chase to Cavorting in major races in New York, and now that Cavorting is headed to the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint, Kimmel is glad to dodge her by sending out Bar of Gold in the Grade 2 Raven Run Stakes, the Saturday feature at Keeneland.

“I think Cavorting is the best 3-year-old filly sprinter around, if not the best of any age,” Kimmel said this week from New York.

Leatherbury opts to run Ben's Cat in Maryland Million Sprint this year

Jim McCue/Maryland Jockey Club
Ben's Cat will run in the Maryland Million Sprint on Saturday at Laurel Park.

In the two years since the Maryland Million Turf Sprint was done away with at Laurel Park, trainer King Leatherbury has cross-entered Ben’s Cat in both the Turf and the Sprint, handicapped the races, and then opted for the Turf.

Leatherbury has changed it up for Saturday’s Maryland Million card, which will include seven restricted stakes worth a combined $800,000. On Wednesday morning, Leatherbury said he had only entered Ben’s Cat in the Sprint.
