Brimstoned finds success in altered state

Shigeki Kikkawa
Brimstoned lost his first five starts, then was gelded. He has now won three straight, including a California-bred allowance (above), and will try to make it four on Saturday.

DEL MAR, Calif. – In the first five starts of his career, Brimstoned never could even finish in the money. But a week after that fifth start, he was gelded. Since then, he has raced three times, winning all, and he will try to increase that streak to four on Saturday at Del Mar in race 7, a first-level allowance going one mile.

Palace likely to show improvement in De Francis

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Palace is one of two horses trainer Linda Rice has nominated to next Saturday's De Francis Memeorial Dash.

Palace should rule a solid favorite when he faces eight rivals Saturday in the $350,000 De Francis Memorial Dash at Laurel Park.

Palace comes into the De Francis off a half-length win over New York-breds in the Hudson Handicap at Belmont Park on Oct. 24 and a fourth-place finish, beaten less than a length, in the Grade 1 Vosburgh Sept. 26 at Saratoga. He had missed some training prior to the Vosburgh, having injured a foot July 30 in the John Morrissey Stakes at Saratoga, and the two-time Grade 1 winner likely will take a step forward Saturday.

Mrs. Revere’s owner will be absent from winner’s circle

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Partisan Politics, winner of the Pebbles last time out, is the probable favorite for Saturday's Mrs. Revere for 3-year-old fillies.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Dr. David Richardson always maintained a hectic schedule, just as any accomplished surgeon and family man would. But he always somehow found time for one of his great passions: horse racing.

Unfortunately for Richardson, a longtime breeder and owner, health problems have precluded him from being part of the racing scene in recent months. He is recovering from complications that arose from knee and spinal surgeries and will be unable to attend the Mrs. Revere Stakes on Saturday at Churchill Downs.

“It’s really cool,” said Baffert, who won the Triple Crown and Breeders’ Cup Classic this year with American Pharoah. “My whole family is going.”

Baffert has long ties to the school and the area. He grew up 70 miles from Tucson in Nogales, Ariz., and still has family in the Tucson area, including his brother, Bill.

Lane Luzzi tracing father's beginnings

Lane Luzzi has wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps as a jockey for many years. On Wednesday, he realized that dream by riding Blimey to a third-place finish in the fifth race at Laurel Park.

As the son of longtime New York rider Mike Luzzi, a winner of more than 3,400 races, Luzzi grew up a half-mile from Belmont Park. In June, he graduated from Floral Park Memorial High School, directly across Plainfield Ave. from the track. During his senior year, he would exercise “six or seven horses” in the morning and then start classes at 10:15 a.m.
