Airoforce has been assigned post 10 as the 3-1 morning-line favorite Saturday in a full field for the Grade 3 Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky.

Fourteen 3-year-olds are entered in the $500,000 Spiral, which is run at 1 1/8 miles on Polytrack, although only 12 can start. Besides Airoforce, trained by Mark Casse, other notable Spiral entries include Jensen for Larry Jones, Kasseopia for Graham Motion, Ralis for Doug O’Neill, Azar for Todd Pletcher, and a foursome for Mike Maker, all as separate wagering interests.

Del Mar has cut $400,000 from its stakes schedule for the summer meeting, which runs July 15 to Sept. 5, and will offer 43 stakes races worth $7.55 million, according to a statement released Wednesday.

In 2015, the track offered $7.95 million in stakes over the same number of races. The meeting opens on a Friday this year rather than a Thursday, as in recent seasons.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The lineup for Saturday’s $1 million Florida Derby surprisingly swelled to 10 3-year-olds when the race was drawn Wednesday, although the last-minute additions of Copingaway, Chovanes, and Isofass did little to change the overwhelming notion that the Grade 1 event remains strictly a two-horse race between the undefeated division leaders Mohaymen and Nyquist.

Amherst Street’s Charles Town allowance win last week was significant on several fronts. It was his first race since June 2014, the first since the death of his owner late last year, and it improved his record to a perfect 7 for 7.

Amherst Street was the co-champion West Virginia-bred 2-year-old of 2013 when he won five races, including four stakes. He shared championship honors with Giovanni Boldini, a West Virginia-bred son of War Front who was based in Ireland with Aidan O’Brien and finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

When owner and breeder Gilbert Campbell and trainer Ned Allard supplemented Abiding Star to the Triple Crown for $6,000 last week, they weren’t thinking about the Kentucky Derby; they were looking down the road to the Preakness.

After going 0 for 6 to begin his career, Abiding Star has won three straight races – a $40,000 maiden claimer at Laurel Park, a first-level allowance at his home base of Parx Racing, and the $80,000 Private Terms at Laurel. He doesn’t have any Kentucky Derby qualifying points and isn’t scheduled to start in a race that offers any.

Trainer Mark Casse said he has pinpointed the $350,000 Jenny Wiley on April 16 at Keeneland as the next race for Tepin instead of pitting the star turf mare against male rivals again in the $300,000 Maker’s 46 Mile the day beforehand. Both are Grade 1 turf races.

Tepin ended her 2015 season by defeating the boys in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, earning a divisional Eclipse Award. The 5-year-old mare is 2 for 2 this year, with both starts coming at Tampa Bay Downs, and brings a four-race win streak into the Jenny Wiley, a 1 1/16-mile race for which she’ll surely be a heavy favorite.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – After nearly a quarter-century of highs and lows as a trainer of Thoroughbreds, David Carroll is switching jobs while staying in the racing business.

Carroll said last week that he is disbanding his public stable and going to work as an assistant to Mark Casse. He began oversight of a 40-horse division this week at Keeneland, where the Casse stable will be very active over the 16-day spring meet, which starts next Friday, April 8.

“I’m excited,” said Carroll. “This actually was a very easy decision.”

Hard Aces and Imperative, second and fourth in the Santa Anita Handicap, will ship to West Virginia for the Grade 2, $1.25 million Charles Town Classic on April 23.

The Big Cap runner-up finish by Hard Aces represented a return to form for the John Sadler trainee. Hard Aces won the Grade 1, 1 1/4-mile Gold Cup at Santa Anita in 2015, but was unplaced his next five starts until the Big Cap. Sadler said the timing is right to ship.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Santa Anita Handicap winner Melatonin will ship to Oaklawn Park for his next start April 16 in the Grade 2, $750,000 Oaklawn Handicap, trainer David Hofmans said Tuesday.

Melatonin scored a 16-1 upset in the March 12 Big Cap, winning by 4 1/4 lengths under Joe Talamo. The win was his first in a graded stakes and second straight around two turns following a highly rated allowance win Feb. 5.

Hofmans considered the Grade 2, $1.25 million Charles Town Classic on April 23 for Melatonin’s next start before opting for the Oaklawn Handicap.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Street Fancy, upset winner of the Grade 1 Starlet in December at Los Alamitos, has been retired from racing and will be bred following her last-place finish Saturday in the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks.

Trainer Phil D’Amato confirmed Tuesday that the filly’s owner, Agave Racing Stable, decided on retirement after Street Fancy misfired for the second time. In her previous start Feb. 6 at Santa Anita, Street Fancy banged her head in the starting gate and finished last in the Grade 2 Las Virgenes.
