Rivelli sends out another fast youngster

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Trainer Larry Rivelli unveiled his second impressive 2-year-old debut winner by Shackleford at this meet when Wellabled romped to victory in the first race Saturday.

Granted, he made the lead over a main track that was kind to early speed all last week, but Wellabled still impressed, turning back an upper-stretch challenge from Godolphin first-timer Guernsey to win by 7 1/2 lengths. He ran five furlongs in 57.68 seconds and got a 78 Beyer Speed Figure.

Allowance race no easy spot for Dads Caps

Barbara D. Livingston
Dads Caps, a two-time winner of the Grade 1 Carter Handicap, has lost six consecutive starts.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Trainer Rudy Rodriguez was hoping that by skipping the Grade 3 Belmont Sprint Championship last weekend and running Dads Caps in an allowance race, it would be a confidence boost heading to Saratoga for his 6-year-old horse in search of his Grade 1 winning form.

After looking at the field assembled for Thursday’s $90,000 multiconditioned allowance race at Belmont Park, Rodriguez thinks he might have made a mistake.

Stopchargingmaria (above) and stablemate Curalina run next in the Shuvee at Saratoga on July 31.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Reigning Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Stopchargingmaria threw in an uncharacteristically poor effort in her last start when she finished sixth in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps. But the three-time Grade 1 winner certainly gave every indication that she’s primed to make amends by working a strong half-mile in 49.01 seconds over the Oklahoma training track at Saratoga on Monday.
