Ag Bullet will make her next start in either the Eddie D or Goldikova Stakes.

After a course-record performance in the Grade 2 Ladies Turf Sprint Stakes at Kentucky Downs on Aug. 31, Ag Bullet could reappear this fall in a variety of races, including two diverse Grade 2 stakes – the $750,000 Eddie D Stakes against males at Santa Anita on Sept. 28, or the $300,000 Goldikova Stakes against fillies and mares at a mile on turf at Del Mar on Nov. 2.

Apprentice jockey Pietro Moran sidelined after spill

Pietro Moran was injured when unseated during a race Tuesday at Fort Erie.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Apprentice jockey Pietro Moran won’t ride at Woodbine this week after he was injured in the last race on Tuesday’s Prince of Wales Stakes card at Fort Erie. 

Moran reportedly injured his back and arm when unseated aboard Mister Meseeks on the far turn in the $5,000 claimer on the main track. 

Moran ranks third in the Woodbine jockey standings with 55 victories and leads all apprentices in wins at the meet. The 18-year-old has won two stakes, including last Saturday’s Niagara on Lac Macaza. He had calls in several stakes this weekend at Woodbine.

Kentucky Downs average purse was record $490K during seven-day meet

The average purse at the recently completed Kentucky Downs meet soared 48.8 percent compared to the same figure last year, according to an analysis conducted by Daily Racing Form.

Kentucky Downs, which ran seven all-turf cards this year, distributed a total of $37.3 million in purses, including bonuses for horses eligible for the Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund, for an average of $490,789 per race, by far the highest total of any North American track in history. Purses at the track are heavily subsidized by revenues from casinos operated by the track’s owners.

Clement has seriously good two-week run

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – What began as a slow summer turned quickly for trainer Christophe Clement, who, from Aug. 24 to Sept. 7 won five races with three seconds and three thirds from 13 starters at four different venues.

The run began with Far Bridge winning the Grade 1 Sword Dancer at Saratoga on Aug. 24 and ended Saturday with Deterministic winning the Grade 3 Virginia Derby and Style Points dead-heating for first in the Virginia Oaks at Colonial Downs. In between, Big Invasion won the Harvey Pack Stakes at Saratoga and Patrick’s Promise won a maiden race at Colonial.

Following hand surgery, Castellano targets early October return

Javier Castellano has been sidelined with a fractured hand since Aug. 30. He hopes to resume riding on Oct. 4.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Javier Castellano, who suffered a fractured hand in a spill at Saratoga on Aug. 30, hopes to return by the first weekend in October, the Hall of Fame rider said Wednesday.

Castellano was injured when his mount Take Me To Church was bumped into by a fallen The Big Torpedo during the stretch run of the Grade 3 Saranac Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 30. Castellano was unseated and after initial X-rays indicated he had no fractures, further imaging revealed he had a tiny fracture in his right hind.

Orseno setting up division at Churchill with hopes of staying

Trainer Joe Orseno will send a string of horses to Churchill Downs, with some runners intended for the Keeneland fall meet as well.

Trainer Joe Orseno plans to send a division of horses to Kentucky on Sunday. It’s a first for the horseman, who will be racing at Churchill Downs on a regular basis. Back in 2000, he won a pair of Breeders’ Cup races at the track, taking the Juvenile with Macho Uno and the Filly and Mare Turf with Perfect Sting.

Orseno is based at Gulfstream Park and also had horses at Monmouth Park. He said most of the Kentucky division will be made up of horses shipping in from New Jersey.

Santa Anita to offer several low-takeout wagers

The new wagers at Santa Anita include a $5 daily double on the final two races of the day and a $3 late pick three. Both will have a 15 percent takeout.

There will be no shortage of low takeout multi-race bets when Santa Anita opens its autumn meeting on Sept. 27.

Santa Anita will offer a $5 late daily double and a $3 late pick three with a lower than normal takeout rate of 15 percent. The bets replace wagers with the same takeout held in recent years in conjunction with Golden Gate Fields in Northern California, which closed permanently in June.

The standard takeout for other pick threes at Santa Anita is 23.68 percent. Other daily double bets held throughout the day have a takeout of 20 percent.

After a Kentucky Downs double, Goliad being pointed to Breeders' Cup Mile

Six days after winning a rich overnight handicap at Kentucky Downs, Goliad came back to win the $1.8 million Mint Millions (above) for Richard Mandella and owners Ramona and Perry Bass.

After two lucrative stakes wins on turf within a week at Kentucky Downs earlier this month, the 7-year-old gelding Goliad will have a quiet September before a potentially busy November at Del Mar.

Goliad won a $481,200 overnight handicap at a mile on Sept. 1 as the 4-1 second choice, and was back in the winner’s circle on Sept. 7 after a 9-1 upset in the Grade 3 Mint Millions, a one-mile race worth $1.8 million.

Goliad, trained by Richard Mandella for Ramona and Perry Bass, earned a cool $1,495,200 for the two victories.
