D'Amato could start three vs. Songbird

ARCADIA, Calif. – Trainer Phil D’Amato is bringing numbers to compete against the undefeated champion Songbird in Saturday’s $200,000 Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita.

As of Wednesday morning, D’Amato was contemplating starting three fillies in the Grade 2 Summertime Oaks at 1 1/16 miles – Bellamentary, the winner of the Angels Flight Stakes on May 15; Coppa, unbeaten in two starts; and possibly Sutton’s Smile, who was third in the Grade 1 Starlet Stakes at Los Alamitos last December.

Hoppertunity to race next at Del Mar

ARCADIA, Calif. – Hoppertunity, third in the $10 million Dubai World Cup in the United Arab Emirates on March 26, will be pointed for the Del Mar summer meeting and will miss the $500,000 Gold Cup at Santa Anita on June 25, trainer Bob Baffert said on Wednesday.

Baffert said Hoppertunity is not ready for the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita.

“I got behind on him,” Baffert said. “He’s slowly starting to respond. He looks good, and he’s healthy.”

Hoppertunity will be pointed for the $100,000 Cougar II Handicap at 1 1/2 miles on the main track July 24, Baffert said.

Pimlico: Carrasco riding hot streak

Jockey Victor Carrasco won nine of 14 mounts last weekend, including five on Saturday.

Jockey Victor Carrasco had a big week at Plimlico, winning with nine of his 14 mounts Saturday through Monday. Carrasco is now tied for the lead in the Pimlico standings with Feargal Lynch, whose business has steadily grown since he shifted his base north from Florida in mid-March.

Carrasco and Lynch each have 21 wins at the Pimlico meet, which concludes June 26. Trevor McCarthy is third in the standings with 17 wins.

Carrasco went 5 for 9 at Pimlico on Saturday and then 2 for 3 on Sunday. He won with both of his mounts at Delaware Park on Monday.

Expected Ruler sustains minor injury in Select Stakes

Expected Ruler sustained a puncure wound running in last Sunday's Select Stakes, but isn't expected to miss much time.

Expected Ruler, who finished fourth as the 3-1 second choice in the Select Stakes at Monmouth Park last Sunday, grabbed his right front ankle during the race, but the injury does not appear to be serious, according to trainer Liam Benson Jr.

Benson believes the injury occurred near the quarter pole.

“It’s about the size of a penny but pretty deep,” Benson said. “It’s more like a puncture than a cut, just above his right ankle.”

Expected Ruler was nailed for third in deep stretch. He was beaten 2 3/4 lengths by race winner Full Salute.

New turf stakes on Saturday

ARCADIA, Calif. - Santa Anita has added a new stakes for the spring-summer meeting – Saturday’s $75,000 Rainbow Stakes for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles on turf.

The Rainbow Stakes is the second turf stakes for 3-year-olds at the meeting, preceded by the Singletary Stakes at a mile on May 14. The Rainbow Stakes is designed as a prep for the $100,000 Oceanside Stakes for 3-year-olds on the opening day of the Del Mar summer meeting, July 15.

Unified develops into top 3-year-old prospect for Centennial Farms

Unified, unbeaten in three starts, will try two turns in the Grade 3 Pegagus.

Unified has accomplished an awful lot in a short period of time. Unbeaten in three starts at three different tracks, he will tackle two turns for the first time in the Grade 3 Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park on Sunday.

Trained by Jimmy Jerkens and owned by a Centennial Farms partnership, Unified won his debut going six furlongs at Gulfstream Park in February. He stretched out to seven furlongs to take the Grade 3 Bay Shore at Aqueduct in April, then handled a giant leap in distance to win the 1 1/8-mile Peter Pan at Belmont Park in May.

Wise Dan to be honored

Wise Dan will be at Churchill Downs on Saturday when the Firecracker Handicap is renamed as the Wise Dan Stakes.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Wise Dan, the Horse of the Year in 2012 and 2013, will be here Saturday night for the race renamed in his honor. The 9-year-old gelding will be led over to the paddock along with the horses running in the Grade 2 turf race, then publicly acknowledged and paraded after the others leave the paddock for the race.

“We’re absolutely thrilled about this,” said Charlie LoPresti, who trained Wise Dan to win 23 of 31 starts and $7.5 million for owner and breeder Morton Fink.

Foster comes at perfect time for Effinex

Effinex has been training at Belmont Park for next Saturday's Stephen Foster Handicap.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A whole bunch of New York’s finest Thoroughbreds were in action last weekend at Belmont Park on a huge Belmont Stakes weekend, with Effinex being among the notable exceptions.

Instead, the New York-bred 5-year-old was flown out Sunday morning on an equine charter that transported a planeload of horses back to Kentucky, where on Saturday night Effinex will take center stage as a solid favorite in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap at Churchill Downs.

Jockey Russell Baze to retire

Jockey Russell Baze, 57, was to announce his retirement from riding Tuesday.

Russell Baze, the all-time winningest rider in U.S. Thoroughbred racing history, will announce his retirement Tuesday, according to a post on the Paulick Report, a racing website.

The Paulick Report quoted Baze’s agent, Ray Harris, as saying the rider told him Sunday night following his mount in the 10th race at Golden Gate Fields that he had ridden his last race.

“I was surprised but I was happy,” Harris was quoted as saying. “He’s my friend, and I wanted him to be sound for his retirement.”

Baze did not immediately respond to a message left on his cell phone.

Prat has suspension stayed a week

ARCADIA, Calif. – Flavien Prat was granted a stay of a three-day suspension for careless riding and will serve the suspension June 23-25 instead of this Thursday through Saturday. Prat was penalized for “altering course without sufficient clearance and causing interference” while aboard Fashionly Handsome in race 1 on June 9. Fashionly Handsome finished third; there was no disqualification.
