Silver Assault highlights Hollendorfer's 6-win day

Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer had three wins at Santa Anita and three wins at Oak Tree at Pleasanton on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. - A memorable six-win day for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer on Saturday included a debut victory from the promising 2-year-old Silver Assault.

Hollendorfer had three consecutive wins at Santa Anita and three wins at the Oak Tree at Pleasanton meeting at the Alameda County Fair in northern California. It was Hollendorfer’s most prolific day since he won seven races at Golden Gate Fields and Portland Meadows on Nov. 17, 2010.

Silver Assault will be part of Hollendorfer’s list of juvenile stakes prospects for the Del Mar summer meeting.

Female 2015 champs work up for July races

ARCADIA, Calif. - The 2015 female champions Beholder, Songbird, and Stellar Wind had workouts Sunday for races in July.

Not all of the race plans have been finalized.

Beholder, the champion older female of 2015, worked five furlongs in 59 seconds, which equaled the fifth-fastest of 107 works at the distance. She is scheduled to start in the $300,000 Clement Hirsch Stakes for fillies and mares at Del Mar on July 30.

The time of the workout was quicker than trainer Richard Mandella expected.

Lord Nelson 'could take shot at Saratoga,' trainer says

ARCADIA, Calif. - Lord Nelson will remain a one-turn specialist this summer following his sharp win in Saturday’s $301,035 Triple Bend Stakes at Santa Anita.

Sunday, trainer Bob Baffert was considering races at Del Mar, such as the $300,000 Bing Crosby Stakes at six furlongs on July 31, or the $200,000 Pat O’Brien Stakes at seven furlongs on Aug. 27, for Lord Nelson. Baffert did not rule out a race at Saratoga this summer. The top seven-furlong sprint at Saratoga is the $700,000 Forego Stakes on Aug. 27.

“I could take a shot at Saratoga,” Baffert said.

Melatonin takes relaxed approach to 2016's second half

ARCADIA, Calif. - A day after his win in the $501,035 Gold Cup at Santa Anita, Melatonin had a quiet morning at trainer David Hofmans’ stable on Sunday.
There was no reason to be in a hurry.

The victory in the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita gave Melatonin a fees-paid berth for the Breeders’ Cup Classic here Nov. 5 through the Win and You’re In program. With that secured, Hofmans said the outlook for the second half of 2016 has changed for Melatonin.

“We can relax now and pick our spots,” Hofmans said. “You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to do.”

Nyquist workout moves him closer to July comeback

ARCADIA, Calif. - Nyquist, the champion 2-year-old male of 2015 and winner of last month's Kentucky Derby, worked five furlongs in 1:02.07 prior to the first race at Santa Anita on Saturday, moving closer to a comeback in an undetermined race later this summer.

Nyquist was ridden by regular rider Mario Gutierrez. The workout was conducted 45 minutes before the start of Saturday’s nine-race program.

California Chrome moves closer to return with six-furlong workout

California Chrome will travel to Dubai next week.

CYPRESS, Calif. – California Chrome’s workouts are getting serious.

With four weeks remaining before his summer debut in the $200,000 San Diego Handicap at Del Mar, California Chrome worked six furlongs in 1:12.40 at Los Alamitos on Saturday. The exercise equaled his longest workout since he returned to training in early May following a win in the $10 million Dubai World Cup in the United Arab Emirates on March 26.

Louisiana Downs: Eramia set to return Wednesday

Jockey Richard Eramia did not compete this past week at Louisiana Downs because he was serving a suspension for a riding infraction, according to his agent, Rick Mocklin. Eramia is due to resume riding Wednesday.

Mocklin said the infraction stemmed from a race in which Eramia’s mount, who had finished second, was disqualified and placed third. It was a weeklong suspension that covered the four-day race week at Louisiana Downs.

Eramia, who keeps a home near Lone Star Park, is a perennial leading rider at Louisiana Downs.

Familiar voice Byers back at Lone Star

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Jim Byers is back in the game.

Byers, an announcer who took a break from racing of more than 15 years to work in other sports, is back calling races on a regular basis this meet at Lone Star Park.

“It’s been great to be back in it,” said Byers, 55. “It kind of feels like I’ve been in it all along, even though there was a 16-year gap when I didn’t do it regularly. I had to relearn some things I hadn’t dealt with in a long time, but it didn’t take too long to shake the rust off.”

Danzing Candy likely for Affirmed Stakes

Grade 2 stakes winner Danzing Candy finished fourth in the Santa Anita Derby after setting a very quick pace.

Danzing Candy, who finished 15th in the Kentucky Derby on May 7 after setting the early pace, is a likely starter in the $100,000 Affirmed Stakes at Santa Anita on July 2, trainer Bob Baffert said.

Danzing Candy was trained by Cliff Sise Jr. through the Kentucky Derby and transferred to Baffert after the race by owners Jim and Dianne Bashor and Ted Aroney. A colt by Twirling Candy, Danzing Candy has won 3 of 6 starts and earned $358,650.

Dortmund may return in San Diego Handicap

By resuming training now, Dortmund is likely to be ready to race by the end of the summer.

Dortmund, the six-time stakes winner who was third in the 2015 Kentucky Derby behind American Pharoah, is nearing his 2016 debut.

Trainer Bob Baffert said this week that Dortmund is a candidate for the $200,000 San Diego Handicap at 1 1/16 miles at Del Mar on July 23. The same race is a goal for California Chrome, the winner of the $10 million Dubai World Cup in March.

Dortmund has been in steady training with Baffert’s division at Los Alamitos in recent weeks. He worked five furlongs in 59.20 seconds there on Thursday.
