Win The Space to face California Chrome - again - in Awesome Again

ARCADIA, Calif. - Win the Space left trainer George Papaprodromou perplexed when the colt was pulled up in the stretch of the $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar on Aug. 20.

“He didn’t fire,” Papaprodromou recalled on Sunday. “We did every test we could do to find out about it. It wasn’t his day.”

When no injury surfaced, Win the Space was put back in serious training in early September. The 4-year-old Win the Space had a smooth month in September, and will start in his third Grade 1 race of 2016 in Saturday’s $300,000 Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita.

Brown considering several options for Connect

Barbara D. Livingston
Connect earned a 103 Beyer Speed Figure for his Pennsylvania Derby victory.

Connect's victory in the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby on Saturday not only further confuses the 3-year-old male divisional rankings, it poses trainer Chad Brown with a tricky decision regarding where to run him next.

Connect took a big step forward in his development by holding Gun Runner at bay through the final furlong of the 1 1/8-mile Pennsylvania Derby, and quite probably we haven’t seen his best race yet. But with only six starts under his belt, would the Breeders' Cup Classic against older runners be a case of too much, too soon?

Runhappy is on track to make his return to racing in the Oct. 1 Ack Ack.

Marcus O'Donnell was shaking out his legs a little after climbing off champion sprinter Runhappy on Sunday morning.

"He was wanting to bust off and do more," said O'Donnell, who is a fellow trainer at Runhappy's base at The Thoroughbred Center in Kentucky. "I pulled the irons up a little so I could restrain him."

Runhappy, who had the Keeneland track to himself shortly after it opened for training, rolled through five furlongs in 58.60 seconds, his final prep for his comeback start in the Grade 3 Ack Ack Handicap this Saturday at Churchill Downs.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Readtheprospectus, a stakes-winning New York-bred gelding who had dipped into the lower-level claiming ranks, has been retired from racing.

Upstart got his last quarter in 23.39 seconds.

“He went off in 24 and change and came home in 23 and change,” said trainer Rick Violette. “Looked good doing it. I’ll end up doing another one similar next week. He’s dead fit; he’s been running all year. We just need to maintain where he is right now.”

Mubtaahij (right) finishes second to Shaman Ghost in the Woodward Stakes.

ELMONT, N.Y. – With so much emphasis placed on Frosted’s third-place finish in the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes, somewhat lost in the mix was the strong effort put in by stablemate Mubtaahij, who finished second, a head behind Shaman Ghost and a head in front of Frosted.

While trainer Kiaran McLaughlin awaits word from Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum on which race is next for Frosted, he knows that Mubtaahij is headed to the $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on Oct. 8.

David Braddy won his 1,000th career race with Fleming Cap on Thursday.

David Braddy is a man of few words, having let his training do his talking since he first took out his license at Calder in 1981. But Braddy was forced to say a little something at Gulfstream Park Thursday after his impressive maiden winner Flemish Cap gave him the 1,000th victory of his training career.
