Trainer Romans looks for third Falls City victory

Go Maggie Go will try to give trainer Dale Romans his third Falls City win.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Dale Romans knows what Thanksgiving dinner is like after winning the Falls City Handicap at Churchill Downs.

“The turkey tastes a lot better,” Romans said.

Stuffing, pumpkin pie and everything else will also taste better if Romans can win the Grade 2 Falls City for the third time. He’ll saddle Go Maggie Go, one of the highweights and top contenders in a field of 11 fillies and mares in the 101st running of the $200,000 race, the 10th of 12 on a Thanksgiving Day card that gets an early start at 11:30 a.m. Eastern.

Jerkens has Shaman Ghost, Effinex in Clark Handicap

Effinex will join fellow Jimmy Jerkens trainee Shaman Ghost in the Clark Handicap.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – If two horses are better than one, well, Jimmy Jerkens’ chance of winning the Clark Handicap for the second straight year just got better.

Jerkens had initially planned to start only Shaman Ghost, and he confirmed Monday that he also has sent Effinex to Churchill Downs for Friday’s 143rd running of the $500,000 Clark, the traditional showcase race of the fall meet.

Effinex, the 2015 Clark winner for owner-breeder Russell Cohen’s Tri-Bone Stables, most recently was a distant seventh in the Nov. 5 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita.

If Patrioticandproud can recapture the good turf form he displayed at Del Mar and Santa Anita, he's a major threat in the Louisville Handicap at Churchill Downs.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Long-distance specialist Patrioticandproud got his season back on track with a win Oct. 29, and he could be headed to the Grade 3, $150,000 Valedictory Stakes over 1 3/4 miles on Tapeta on the meet’s closing day, Dec. 4.

“We’re thinking about it,” trainer Mark Casse said.

Swynford next for Sailing Home

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Sailing Home graduated in style in his career debut here Oct. 30, going gate to wire by 9 3/4 lengths at six furlongs on the Tapeta under jockey Patrick Husbands. He’ll quickly get an opportunity to test himself against stakes company as trainer Mark Casse said he would be pointed to Saturday’s $125,000 Swynford Stakes for 2-year olds, which also will be run over six furlongs on Tapeta.

Casse had high praise for Sailing Home after his debut win.

Ashleyluvssugar tops Hollywood Turf Cup field

Ashleyluvssugar's win in the John Henry on Sunday was his second straight win in a Grade 2 race.

Ashleyluvssugar, who won the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap during the summer meeting here and most recently was fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf, tops a field of seven that was entered on Sunday for the Grade 2, $200,000 Hollywood Turf Cup on Friday at Del Mar.

 Gary Stevens, who was aboard Ashleyluvssugar for wins this year in the Del Mar Handicap and Grade 2 John Henry Turf Championship at Santa Anita on Oct. 2, has the mount again for trainer Pete Eurton.

Big Hit to remain sprinting, for now

Big Hit, who scored a sharp win against maidens going 6 1/2 furlongs on Saturday, will sprint once more before being asked to try two turns again, trainer Phil D’Amato said Sunday.

 “I’d like to keep sprinting him one more race, kind of build him up to something better,” D’Amato said.

 Big Hit, a 2-year-old son of Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver, finished seventh in his debut when sprinting at Del Mar in a race won by subsequent FrontRunner Stakes winner Gormley. He then faded to sixth when sent one mile at Santa Anita. Saturday marked his third start.

Mastery will target CashCall Futurity

Mastery, 2 for 2 after winning the Bob Hope, will stretch out around two turns for the CashCall Futurity at Los Alamitos.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Mastery came out of his victory in the Grade 3 Bob Hope Stakes at Del Mar on Saturday in good order and will stretch out around two turns in his next start in the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity at Los Alamitos, trainer Bob Baffert said Sunday.

 Mastery, a son of Candy Ride, ran his record to 2 for 2 with his win in the seven-furlong Bob Hope.

 Everett Dobson, who races as Cheyenne Stable, owns Mastery. He said Mastery is the only horse he currently has with Baffert.

Tf Racee Runaway outlasts Fired Up Perry in Breeders Futurity

Tf Racee Runaway was always prominent for a neck win over Fired Up Perry in the $1 million LQHBA Breeders Futurity on Saturday night at Evangeline Downs in Opelousas, La. It was another head back to favorite and fastest qualifier Rdd Lajollanfastdash in third.

John Hamilton rode Tf Racee Runaway ($19.20), who covered 400 yards on a fast track in 19.65 seconds. Tf Racee Runaway races for his breeder, Tate Farms, and is trained by Lanny Keith. Tf Racee Runaway earned $456,410 for the win in the LQHBA Breeders Futurity.
