Dynatail coasted to victory by more than five lengths in a first-level allowance Sunday.

OLDSMAR, Fla. – The 2016 Florida Oaks was won by a British horse with an Italian name making her U.S. debut for an Australian trainer and a French rider. When Baciami Piccola rallied to win the Grade 3 race for trainer Brian Lynch and jockey Julien Leparoux, she reinforced the idea that talented runners invade Tampa Bay Downs from all over when there is big money on the line.

White-hot Miller sorry to see 2016 season end

Benoit & Associates
Trainer Peter Miller is all smiles after stablemates Solid Wager (background) and St. Joe Bay finished in a dead heat for first in the Midnight Lute Stakes.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Peter Miller’s stable was in such excellent form in the final days of 2016 that he had four stakes winners in three races.

If that sounds odd, it’s because two of Miller’s runners – Solid Wager and St. Joe Bay finished in a dead heat for first in the $100,000 Midnight Lute Stakes for sprinters on Saturday. Friday, Miller swept the two stakes on the eight-race program, winning the $94,935 Kalookan Queen Stakes for female sprinters with Bad Ju Ju and the $80,580 Eddie Logan Stakes for 2-year-olds on turf with Vending Machine.

Fourth time at Grade 1 level the charm for Decked Out

Benoit & Associates
Decked Out became a Grade 1 winner in the American Oaks.

ARCADIA, Calif. - With hours to spare, Decked Out became a Grade 1 stakes winner as a 3-year-old in Saturday’s $302,415 American Oaks at Santa Anita. The objective took longer than expected.

The American Oaks, for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/8 miles on turf, was Decked Out’s fourth consecutive start at the highest level. She was close in one of those races, second by a head in the Del Mar Oaks in August, and well-beaten in the other two starts in Grade 1 races – a ninth in the Belmont Oaks in July and 12th in the Rodeo Drive Stakes at Santa Anita on Oct. 1.

Pick six jackpot at $212,000 for Saturday

ARCADIA, Calif. - Ten ticketholders hit the pick six for $101,623 at Santa Anita on Friday, but the single-ticket jackpot carryover pool soared to $212,103 for Saturday’s program.

The single-ticket provision was introduced at the start of the winter-spring meeting on Monday. Friday was the third day of the meet, and there has yet to be a pick six with only one winning ticket, which would trigger a payoff of the jackpot pool.

Even Thunder heads south for Mucho Macho Man Stakes

Coady Photography
Even Thunder wins the Shakopee Juvenile by four lengths under jockey Erick Cruz.

Even Thunder, who won the King’s Swan Stakes at Aqueduct on Dec. 2, will make his next start in the $100,000 Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream Park next Saturday, trainer Joe Orseno said.

Orseno felt the one-turn mile configuration of the Mucho Macho Man was a better spot to stretch the horse out in distance than two turns over the inner track. Even Thunder has competed in only sprints in his first five starts. The King’s Swan was Even Thunder’s first and only start for Orseno and Leonard Green’s D J Stable, which purchased the horse privately in October.

Debut winner Girvin pointing to Lecomte

Promising colt December Seven provides McGee with 1,000th career victory

Paul McGee not only got his 1,000th career win on Thursday at Fair Grounds, he got it for a longtime client, Samantha Siegel’s Jay Em Ess Racing. And not only did the win come for Jay Em Ess, it came with a colt who might turn out to be a serious stakes horse, December Seven.

December Seven won a second-level allowance race by four lengths, this third win from five starts. December Seven lost his career debut sprinting, but had serious trouble while finishing third at Keeneland in October, and otherwise has been perfect in his two-turn races.

Danzatrice earns shot at Houston Ladies Classic

Amanda Hodges Weir/Hodges Photography
Ridden by Florent Geroux, Danzatrice runs away with the Tiffany Lass on Monday.

Two summers ago, Danzatrice hinted at very high-level ability, and she flashed the same talent winning the $50,000 Tiffany Lass Stakes last Monday at Fair Grounds. Danzatrice won the two-turn dirt race by more than seven lengths over Grade 1 winner Include Betty, and her strong mile and 70-yard time of 1:42.45 produced a career-best 93 Beyer Speed Figure.

The eye-catching performance has earned Danzatrice a shot at one of the better older females in the country, I’m a Chatterbox, in the Grade 3, $400,000 Houston Ladies Classic, trainer Steve Asmussen said Thursday.

Canani seeks to reopen California stable

ARCADIA, Calif. – Trainer Julio Canani, who was suspended for 13 months through November for financial improprieties related to the sale of horses in the late 2000s, has taken steps to reopen a stable, according to California Horse Racing Board officials.

Canani was recently refused a trainer’s license by the racing board, a decision the trainer has yet to appeal.

The denial was based on the terms of Canani’s 2015 suspension, which stated he must participate in a fitness for license hearing before possibly being reinstated.
