Modify, Zaphical stand out in Thursday feature

Modify will be making her first start since November on Thursday.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Oaklawn will put the spotlight on fillies and mares Thursday in the eighth race, an optional $35,000 claimer over six furlongs. Modify and Zaphical both appear to be leading contenders after finishing second and third to Finley’sluckycharm in a second-level allowance in September at Churchill Downs.

Finley’sluckycharm has since gone on to win two more races, including the Dream Supreme at Churchill. Following the stakes, she was a close second in the Grade 1 La Brea at Santa Anita in her most recent start Dec. 26.

Rockshaw will point to 3-year-old sprint stakes

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Rockshaw is a candidate for the 3-year-old sprint stakes at Oaklawn Park after his win in a Saturday allowance, trainer Ron Moquett said. The horse earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 82 for his first-level allowance score, a race in which he covered 5 1/2 furlongs in 1:04.31.

The initial race for Rockshaw’s division is the $125,000 Gazebo on March 4. The other is the $150,000 Carousel on April 13.

N.Y.-based Jose Ortiz has great weekend in Arkansas

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Trainer Ron Moquett brought Eclipse Award finalist Jose Ortiz to town to ride opening weekend at Oaklawn Park, and the two had a memorable run Saturday and Sunday. The New York-based Ortiz won his first local race Saturday with the promising 3-year-old Rockshaw, then locked up the late double Sunday with the impressive Whitmore and the 3-year-old maiden special weight winner Dupree.

Services on Wednesday for Glenn DiSanto

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – A service will be held Wednesday in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., for longtime New York horseman Glenn DiSanto, who died Saturday after a lengthy bout with cancer. He was 62.

The service will be held at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Ave., from 4 to 8 p.m. There will also be a memorial service held in August at Saratoga for DiSanto, who hailed from upstate New York.

Busanda winner Lockdown eyes Busher

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Lockdown, now 2 for 2 over the inner track following her victory in Sunday’s Busanda Stakes, could stay in New York and point for the Busher Stakes on Feb. 25.

Although there are suitable stakes for Lockdown at Gulfstream, trainer Bill Mott said Sunday that she would have to undergo an acclimation period after moving from cold to hot weather if she shipped there.

“It’s not the greatest time of year to move a horse to Florida,” Mott said.

Wonder Gal may not be done

Wonder Gal was bought recently as a broodmare prospect, but her 13 1/2-length win in the Ladies Handicap might keep her on the track for a while.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Plans for Wonder Gal, the 13 1/2-length winner of the Ladies Handicap last Friday, were in flux Monday as her new connections decide whether to breed her or race her again.

Trainer Leah Gyarmati said Wonder Gal came out of the Ladies in good order and that owner Bernard Cleary is contemplating options for the 5-year-old New York-bred mare. Cleary, who races as Clearview Stable and owns Clearsky Farm, purchased Wonder Gal a few weeks ago primarily as a broodmare prospect.

Stymie Stakes likely next spot for Sunny Ridge

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Sunny Ridge, the winner of Saturday’s $125,000 Jazil Stakes at Aqueduct, likely will make his next start in the $125,000 Stymie Stakes at Aqueduct on March 12.

Owner Dennis Drazin said Monday that he was willing to entertain an offer to wheel his horse back in two weeks for the $12 million Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream, but the last slot for that 12-horse field was taken Monday by Noble Bird, whose connections made a deal with Earle Mack.

Jockey Maldonado gets first win of comeback

Edwin Maldonado notched his first win since August on Sunday.

Three weeks after returning from severe rib injuries sustained in early September, jockey Edwin Maldonado won Sunday’s second race for maiden claimers at Santa Anita, his first victory since August.

Maldonado fractured six ribs when he was unseated in a workout at Del Mar on Sept. 4. He was hospitalized for more than a week and underwent surgery to stabilize the ribs.

Champagne Room preps for Las Virgenes Stakes during busy training session

Champagne Room will begin her 3-year-old campaign in the Las Virgenes Stakes.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Champagne Room, the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies on Nov. 5, worked five furlongs in 1:01.40 at Santa Anita on Monday, continuing to progress toward her 3-year-old debut in the $200,000 Las Virgenes Stakes at Santa Anita on Feb. 5.

Champagne Room was prominent among 234 recorded works Monday. There were a large number of workouts as trainers play catch-up following persistent rain last week and expected wet weather later this week.

Noble Bird, Prayer for Relief fill out prospective field for Pegasus World Cup

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – And then there were none.

The final spots in the prospective lineup for the $12 million Pegasus World Cup here Jan. 28 were filled Monday when deals were finalized to bring Grade 1 winner Noble Bird and the 9-year-old Prayer for Relief into the race.
