Paradise Woods puts in easy half-mile for Kentucky Oaks

Shigeki Kikkawa
Paradise Woods won the Santa Anita Oaks by 11 3/4 lengths on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Paradise Woods continues to do everything easily. On Friday, she worked an effortless half-mile, her first breeze since taking the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks by 11 3/4 lengths on April 8 in her third career start.

Regular rider Flavien Prat worked Paradise Woods minutes before 8 a.m. on a warm Friday at Santa Anita. Trainer Richard Mandella did not expect her to work fast; she went in 47.60 seconds by herself, with minimal encouragement.

“You could see it was pretty easy, real nice,” Mandella said.

Pink Lloyd points to New Providence Stakes

Michael Burns
Pink Lloyd earned a career-high Beyer when winning the Jacques Cartier Stakes.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Pink Lloyd recorded his first stakes victory and won Woodbine’s first stakes race of the season in last weekend’s Jacques Cartier Stakes. He likely will make his next start May 6 in the $125,000 New Providence Stakes for Ontario-sired 3-year-olds and up, trainer Robert Tiller said.

The lightly raced 5-year-old is now a four-time winner in six career starts but didn’t make it to the races until last August. Tiller said minor injuries delayed Pink Lloyd’s racing debut.

Why Two hits the road for Twin Spires Turf Sprint

Barbara D. Livingston
Why Two will be sent to Churchill Downs for the Twin Spires Turf Sprint in an effort to qualify for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.

ARCADIA, Calif. – A stakes-winning turf sprinter in California will ship to Kentucky next week, hoping to build a résumé that is sufficient for entry into the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, which will be run this fall in California. Sound convoluted?

Why Two would have been a contender in the $75,000 Siren Lure Stakes on Sunday at Santa Anita, but trainer Mike Machowsky believes the Grade 3 Twin Spires Turf Sprint on May 5 at Churchill Downs gives the gelding a better chance to make it into the BC Turf Sprint this fall at Del Mar.

Midnight Storm returning to familiar footing in Gold Cup at Santa Anita

Barbara D. Livingston
Midnight Storm worked five furlongs Sunday in preparation for the Santa Anita Handicap.

ARCADIA, Calif. – It is one of the oldest excuses in racing, and sometimes valid – the horse did not like the racetrack. Anyone who watched Midnight Storm struggle last weekend in the Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap would be hard-pressed to dispute jockey Mike Smith’s post-race analysis.

Midnight Storm finished third as the odds-on favorite, after which Smith told trainer Phil D’Amato, “He didn’t handle the track that well.”

Page McKenney will point to Lyman Stakes

Jim McCue/Maryland Jockey Club
Page McKenney missed some training time with a bruised heel.

Page McKenney, who was under consideration for the Charles Town Classic, will skip that race and instead be pointed to the $100,000 Lyman Stakes at Parx Racing on April 29.

Page McKenney came out of a March 26 workout at Pimlico Race Course with a bruised heel on his right front hoof. The injury forced him to miss some training. The Pimlico track also was closed for repairs from April 10-12.

Between the injury and the track closure, he missed too much training time to be ready for the Charles Town Classic, according to trainer Mary Eppler.

The Grade 2 Charles Town Classic drew a field of eight on Wednesday, topped by Stanford, who will be seeking a repeat victory in the three-turn, 1 1/8-mile race for older horses.

Secretary At War to test speed in Woodhaven

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Frostmourne, ridden by Jose Ortiz, wins the Awad for 2-year-olds by 3 1/2 lengths.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Trainer Jimmy Jerkens will try to stretch Secretary At War out in distance a little bit in Saturday’s $100,000 Woodhaven Stakes for 3-year-olds.

The Woodhaven, scheduled for 1 1/16 miles, drew a field of only five for the turf. Two others were entered for the main track only.

Secretary At War, a son of War Front owned and bred by Joe Allen, is coming off a maiden win going 7 1/2 furlongs at Gulfstream Park. Prior to that, he finished third in a 1 1/16-mile maiden race at Gulfstream after breaking from post 12.
