Paradise Woods gets rest after disappointing Kentucky Oaks

Barbara D. Livingston
Paradise Woods set a very fast pace in the Kentucky Oaks and faded to 11th as the heavy favorite.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Paradise Woods will be given a brief rest at a local farm after undergoing tests that showed she has no injuries following an 11th-place finish in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs on May 5.

Trainer Richard Mandella said Sunday that he has no race plans for Paradise Woods, who jumped to the fore of the 3-year-old filly division with an authoritative win in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Oaks on April 8.

“We’ll give her a chance to settle down for a little bit,” Mandella said. “I owe it to her after what she’s done.

Barbara D. Livingston
Kobe's Back might return for the Triple Bend on March 11.

ARCADIA, Calif. – There are stakes options from coast to coast this Saturday for the five-time stakes winner Kobe’s Back.

As of Sunday, owners Lee and Susan Searing were leaning toward staying at Santa Anita for the Grade 2 Kona Gold Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs instead of shipping to Pimlico for the Grade 3 Maryland Sprint Stakes at six furlongs.

The Kona Gold has a purse of $200,000; the Maryland Sprint is worth $150,000.

Mondaymorningblues showing precocity for Miller

ARCADIA, Calif. – The 2-year-old filly Mondaymorningblues has accomplished enough in recent training to leave trainer Peter Miller hopeful that she can win her debut in a maiden special weight race at 4 1/2 furlongs in Thursday’s second race at Santa Anita.

Owned by Gary Barber, Mondaymorningblues was purchased for $70,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale last year. Mondaymorningblues began workouts in late March and has had six recorded works at the San Luis Rey Downs training center in northern San Diego county, where Miller keeps the majority of his horses.

As a result, King and His Court will proceed to the $125,000 Plate Trial over 1 1/8 miles on Tapeta on June 11. The race will serve as his final prep for the $1 million Queen’s Plate on July 2, trainer Mark Casse said.

Highway Star could run next in Ogden Phipps

Barbara D. Livingston
Highway Star (right) is likely headed to the Ogden Phipps on June 10.

Highway Star, the New York-bred filly who won her third graded stakes of her career in Saturday’s Grade 2 Ruffian Stakes at Belmont, could make her next start in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps at Belmont on June 10.

Highway Star is also eligible for the $200,000 Critical Eye Stakes for New York-breds on May 29, but that would mean running back in 16 days and it’s a race that wouldn’t do much for her potential value as a broodmare.

Highway Star is 4 for 4 at Belmont Park, all in one-turn races from seven furlongs to a mile. The Phipps is run around one turn at 1 1/16 miles.

Haskell better fit for Timeline than Belmont Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
Peter Pan winner Timeline will be pointed to the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park.

Timeline, who remained undefeated from three starts with a 3 1/2-length victory in Saturday’s Grade 3, $200,000 Peter Pan, has the Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on July 30 as his main summer target, trainer Chad Brown said Sunday morning.

Brown reiterated Sunday what he said right after the race Saturday: that Timeline does not strike him as a horse who wants to run 1 1/2 miles, the distance of the Belmont Stakes. Brown said he would likely use the Grade 3, $100,000 Pegasus on June 18 at Monmouth as a prep for the Haskell.

Look for Zhukova to show up at Breeders' Cup this fall

Barbara D. Livingston
The European mare Zhukova is a candidate for the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf this fall at Del Mar.

Zhukova, the filly who dominated the boys by six lengths in Saturday’s Grade 1 Man o’ War at Belmont, is due to fly back to Ireland on Thursday. However, her connections are intending a return trip to the U.S. in the fall and the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

Mark Weld, the assistant to his father, Dermot, trainer of Zhukova, said the filly “deserves a shot” at the Breeders’ Cup, which will be held this year at Del Mar.

Lady Eli likely headed to Santa Anita for Gamely

Barbara D. Livingston
Lady Eli completed her first timed work Saturday since finishing second in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Lady Eli, the popular multiple Grade 1-winning turf mare, will likely make her next start in the Grade 1, $300,000 Gamely Stakes at Santa Anita on May 27, trainer Chad Brown said Sunday morning.

Brown said the likelihood of catching firm ground and the 1 1/8-mile distance of the race are the reasons why he’s interested in shipping her west. He also likes the spacing between that race and the Grade 1 Diana, scheduled for July 22 at Saratoga.

“She’s not definite, but she’s likely to go to the Gamely,” Brown said.
