Pletcher has two or three for Mother Goose

ELMONT, N.Y. – A field of five or six is in the making for the $250,000 Mother Goose on Saturday at Belmont Park.

Todd Pletcher said he could run two or three fillies in the 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-old fillies. The Mother Goose, which was downgraded from a Grade 1 to a Grade 2 this year, will have a purse of $250,000, a $50,000 cut from 2016.

Pletcher plans to start Lights of Medina and Moana, who finished second and fifth in the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan last out. He also is considering My Miss Tapit for the race.

Lightstream ships in for Princess Rooney

Lightstream will run in Saturday's Princess Rooney, trainer Brian Lynch said.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Trainer Brian Lynch confirmed Monday that Lightstream will return to the scene of her maiden victory 15 months ago as the likely favorite for Saturday’s Grade 2 Princess Rooney. Lightstream is coming off a third-place finish behind By the Moon in the Grade 3 Bed o’ Roses at Belmont Park this month.

The Princess Rooney, part of the annual Summit of Speed card, is a Win and You’re In qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint in November and Del Mar.

Former jockey Burress finding success as trainer

Beverly Burress, who closed out her riding career at Louisiana Downs in September 2013, began training last fall and now has a 14-horse stable based in Bossier City, La. She had won four races from 13 starts at the meet through Sunday for a 31 percent strike rate at Louisiana Downs.

Burress, who just picked up five horses for a new client, owns some of the horses she trains and as such was tied for third in the owners’ standings at Louisiana Downs through Sunday. One of her winningest horses, Lil Becky, was seeking to win her fourth straight race Monday.

Rumpole might try turf in Prelude Stakes

Rumpole enters the Stymie coming off back-to-back six furlong wins.

Rumpole, who has won three stakes in his last three starts, is under consideration for the $60,000 Prelude at Louisiana Downs, according to trainer Bob Young. The 1 1/16-mile turf race for 3-year-olds is Aug. 5.

The Prelude is designed to produce starters for the $200,000 Super Derby, which will be run on grass for the first time when it is renewed Sept. 9. Rumpole has won stakes this year at Sam Houston and his base of Lone Star Park.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – By winning the Grade 3 Chicago Handicap on Saturday, Finley’sluckycharm became the first horse in 13 years to win three stakes at a single Churchill meet. The 4-year-old filly won the ungraded Roxelana and the Grade 3 Winning Colors earlier in the meet.

Lunar Pal, trained by Steve Asmussen, was the last to win three, taking the Kentucky Juvenile, the now-defunct Kentucky Breeders’ Cup, and the Bashford Manor in 2004. Other known Churchill triples include Favorite Trick (1997), Packet (1994), and Mrs. Revere (1984).

Purse on hold after suspended owner runs winning horse

ARCADIA, Calif. – The $71,510 purse of an optional claimer at Santa Anita on Saturday has been placed on hold and eventually may be redistributed because the winning owner was ineligible to run horses after being suspended last Friday.

Nick Cafarchia, 78, failed to appear at a hearing regarding financial responsibilities, track stewards said Sunday. The matter is being investigated by the California Horse Racing Board, stewards said.

Battle of Midway could face Classic Empire and Timeline in the Haskell Invitational.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Battle of Midway had no difficultly beating three overmatched rivals in Saturday’s Grade 3 Affirmed Stakes for 3-year-olds at Santa Anita for his first stakes win.

Sent off as the 1-10 favorite, Battle of Midway led throughout to win the race at 1 1/16 miles by 4 1/4 lengths.

His next assignment will be trickier.

Irap's next start could be Indiana Derby

Irap won his second graded stakes of the year with the Ohio Derby on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Irap, who won his second graded stakes of the year in Saturday’s Grade 3 Ohio Derby, is likely to start in the Grade 3 Indiana Derby at Indiana Grand on July 15, trainer Doug O’Neill said Sunday.

Irap won the Grade 2 Blue Grass Stakes in a 31-1 upset April 8 before finishing 18th of 20 in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 6. In the Ohio Derby, Irap closed from sixth in a field of nine to win by a nose over Girvin, who was 13th in the Kentucky Derby.
