Theriot to appeal suspension

Jamie Theriot plans to appeal a three-day suspension for failing to ride his mount to the wire at Los Alamitos on July 7, according to his agent, Saul Marquez.

Fast Cotton set the pace in a maiden race for 2-year-olds at five furlongs but faded in the final furlong to finish fifth. Fast Cotton was beaten a head for fourth by Neighborhood Bully.

The suspension is scheduled for the final three days of the Los Alamitos summer meeting – Friday through Sunday.

High Providence inspires Breeders' Cup dreams

High Providence won a two-turn turf race for 2-year-olds like a horse with a future last Saturday night at Lone Star Park near Dallas.

He rallied from last for a 1 1/2-length victory in his career debut and handled a number of variables, including shipping from his base of Louisiana Downs.

“I thought he was pretty straightforward, did his job,” said Jason Meaux, who trains High Providence for Run For The Cross. “He handled the ship good, handled the paddock like a pretty good professional.”

Jockamo's Song possible for Louisiana Cup Sprint

Jockamo’s Song, who invaded from the East Coast to win the $100,000 Louisiana Legends Sprint last Saturday night at Evangeline Downs, could stay down south a little longer.

Trainer Michael Stidham said Monday that Jockamo’s Song is being considered for the $50,000 Louisiana Cup Sprint. The six-furlong race for statebreds is Aug. 5 at Louisiana Downs.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – A notable absentee from the Grade 3 Singspiel Stakes on July 2 at Woodbine was Danish Dynaformer, who won the race in 2016. Trainer Roger Attfield said Danish Dynaformer is getting a break at Kinghaven Farms in King City, Ontario, after coming out of the Grade 3 Louisville Handicap at Churchill Downs on May 20 with bone bruising.

Oscar Performance paid $13 in winning the Belmont Derby on Saturday.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Oscar Performance and New Money Honey were the best of their age group on the turf at 2. Now, midway through their 3-year-old seasons, neither wants to relinquish the mantle.

On Saturday, Oscar Performance and New Money Honey were victorious in the two richest races for 3-year-old turf horses in the U.S., with Oscar Performance winning the Grade 1, $1.2 million Belmont Derby Invitational by two lengths while New Money Honey won the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Oaks by a neck.

Those wins came a month after both won the local prep race for the Derby and Oaks.

Keen Ice may face Gun Runner in Whitney Stakes

Keen Ice had lost 10 consecutive starts since August 2015.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Keen Ice, winner of Saturday’s Grade 2, $750,000 Suburban Stakes, will most likely make his next start in the Grade 1, $1.2 million Whitney Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 5, trainer Todd Pletcher said Sunday.

It was at Saratoga two years ago that Keen Ice upset Triple Crown winner American Pharoah in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes.

Asmussen has great weekend after shaky start

Steve Asmussen lined up a large contingent of runners for the six stakes races run at Prairie Meadows this past Thursday through Saturday, two on each card. His first two starters, Chantelline and Ever So Clever, lost races Thursday night that they were favored to win.

“Thank goodness there were two more days,” Asmussen said Sunday.
