Sea Calisi out with injury

Sea Calisi is sidelined indefinitely.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Sea Calisi, the winner of the Grade 1 Beverly D. in 2016 and a two-time winner of the Grade 2 Sheepshead Bay, is sidelined indefinitely with an injury, trainer Chad Brown confirmed Saturday.

Brown said Sea Calisi was injured on June 25, just prior to a scheduled workout over the Belmont turf course. Brown said Sea Calisi appeared to slip while galloping on the turf course.

“She injured herself behind,” Brown said. “Still awaiting diagnostics on her to confirm the injury.”

Tapwrit gets another week of leisure

ELMONT, N.Y. – Unlike his fellow Triple Crown race winners, Always Dreaming and Cloud Computing, Belmont Stakes winner Tapwrit did not work on Saturday. Aron Wellman, the president of Eclipse Thoroughbreds, one of the principal owners of Tapwrit, said trainer Todd Pletcher decided to wait another week before breezing the colt as the connections decide what to do next.

Wellman said that while races such as the Jim Dandy and Haskell are under consideration, Tapwrit could simply train up to the Travers at Saratoga on Aug. 26.

Om gets his year started in American Stakes

ARCADIA, Calif. – Even without a start earlier this year, Om will be ahead of schedule when he starts in Tuesday’s Grade 3 American Stakes at a mile on turf at Santa Anita.

Last year, Om was rested from March to August and later finished second by a nose in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita last November.

Cupid to miss Suburban Handicap due to illness

ARCADIA, Calif. – Grade 1 winner Cupid will miss the Grade 2, $750,000 Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park next Saturday because of illness, trainer Bob Baffert said on Saturday.

Cupid won the Grade 1 Gold Cup at Santa Anita on May 27 in his only start this year and worked as recently as June 18. The illness is starting to subside, Baffert said.

“He’s getting over it,” Baffert said.

Baffert said he does not have any race goals for Cupid, who has won 5 of 10 starts and earned $1,636,803 for the Coolmore team of Derrick Smith, Sue Magnier, and Michael Tabor.

Grade 1 winner Obviously retired at 9

ARCADIA, Calif. – Obviously, the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita last November and eight other stakes in a six-year career, has been retired after being diagnosed with a bone bruise in a foreleg.

The injury was detected in recent weeks, according to trainer Phil D’Amato. A 9-year-old gelding, Obviously won 13 of 29 starts and earned $2,321,751 for owners Anthony Fanticola and Joe Scardino.

Closing-day Single 6 tickets return $3,435

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Winning 20-cent tickets for the mandatory dispersal of the Single 6 wager at Churchill Downs returned $3,435 apiece as the 38-day spring meet closed Friday night with an 11-race program.

Conducted on races 5 through 10, the Single 6 drew an all-sources handle of $762,462. The Single 6 jackpot had swelled to $146,754 after going more than a month without being swept by a solo winner, as is required to empty the jackpot.

The winning numbers were 9-6-9-1-6-4. Their respective odds were 5-2, 1-2, 9-1, 6-5, 5-1, and 1-1.

Gormley almost ready to get serious again

Santa Anita Derby winner Gormley could give jockey Victor Espinoza his fourth Kentucky Derby win.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Gormley is nearing a return to full training after being given three weeks of light exercise following a fourth-place finish in the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes on June 10.

Trainer John Shirreffs said on Friday that Gormley could have a workout in early July.

“I gave him a break,” Shirreffs said. “He’s starting to rebound. It looks like he’s put on a little weight.”

Baffert to become trainer of Masochistic

Masochistic has won both of his starts this year, most recently in the Grade 2 Pat O'Brien in August.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Masochistic, a multiple-stakes-winning sprinter, will have a new trainer when he returns to the racetrack after a summertime rest.

Co-owner Will Shamlian said on Friday that Masochistic will be transferred from Ron Ellis to Bob Baffert. Masochistic is at Taylor Made Farm in Kentucky and is expected to return to training at Santa Anita after the Del Mar summer meeting.

Shamlian said that he had a difference of opinion with Ellis on the direction of Masochistic’s career.

“We weren’t seeing eye to eye,” Shamlian said.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – The Grade 1-winning 4-year-old filly Time and Motion ships Tuesday from New York to start July 8 in the Grade 3, $100,000 Modesty Handicap at Arlington, trainer Jimmy Toner confirmed Friday.

Time and Motion adds heft to a race that is coming up stronger than its grade and purse. Also expected to run is the exciting South American import Dona Bruja, a Grade 1 winner in her native Argentina who in her U.S. debut handed the very sharp filly Believe in Bertie a 1 1/2-length defeat in the Mint Julep Stakes Churchill Downs.
