Phat Man went from last to first in the Long Branch Stakes on Saturday.

Phat Man is being considered for a stakes at Laurel Park, trainer Joe Sharp said. The runner-up from the Super Derby at Louisiana Downs, Phat Man is nominated to the Grade 3, $200,000 Commonwealth, a 1 1/8-mile turf race on Sept. 30.

The Super Derby was run on turf for the first time this year, and Phat Man set the pace in the 1 1/16-mile race on Sept. 9. Earlier this year, he won the $100,000 Long Branch on the main track at Monmouth Park.

Colonelsdarktemper firing bullets for Oklahoma Derby

Colonelsdarktemper paid $16 in winning the West Virginia Derby at Mountaineer on Saturday.

West Virginia Derby winner Colonelsdarktemper has fired three consecutive bullet works for the Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park on Sunday, with his latest five-eighths in 59.60 seconds. The move was the fastest of 41 at the distance Sunday at Churchill Downs, but it was significant for more than its speed.

“We put him behind a horse, made him eat dirt so if he gets caught in that trap and we’re shuffled back he won’t mind the dirt so bad now,” said trainer Jinks Fires.

B Squared getting blinkers for Oklahoma Derby

Shane Miceli/Vassar Photography
The 3-year-old B Squared, making his turf debut and first start around two turns, wins the Silky Sullivan under Mario Gutierrez.

B Squared will add blinkers for the Oklahoma Derby on Sunday at Remington Park, trainer Doug O’Neill said.

B Squared, who ran third to eventual Travers winner West Coast in the Grade 3 Los Alamitos Derby, is coming off an eighth-place finish in the West Virginia Derby. B Squared found himself farther off the pace than usual in the Aug. 5 race at Mountaineer.

“We’re putting blinkers on for the first time, so I think that will put him in the race a little bit,” O’Neill said. “It’s sort of a new little wrinkle to him.”

Oklahoma Derby to decide Girvin's plans for Breeders' Cup

Michael Amoruso
Girvin earned a Win and You're In berth in the Breeders' Cup Classic with his win in the Grade 1 Haskell.

Girvin has Breeders’ Cup options come November. He earned a berth in the Classic by winning the Haskell Invitational, but his connections also are open to the Dirt Mile.

The first order of business for the horse comes Sunday, said trainer Joe Sharp. Girvin is on deck for the Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park.

A decision on whether to proceed to the Breeders’ Cup will be made after his connections see how he comes out of the race.

“We’ll let Girvin tell us what he’s capable of,” said Sharp.

Rivelli and Valdivia enjoying especially dominant seasons

Barbara D. Livingston
Jockey Jose Valdivia Jr. has a 31 percent strike rate this season at Arlington Park going into the meet's closing week.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – Larry Rivelli, barring a surprisingly unsuccessful closing three-day race week, is going to set a record for wins by a trainer during an Arlington season.

“Big deal,” you’re probably saying. Arlington is a shadow of its former self. Most major or even semi-major outfits have left as purses and the racing schedule have shrunk. All that’s true.

Tom's Ready appears to be just that ahead of Kelso Handicap

Barbara D. Livingston
Tom's Ready enters the Grade 2 Kelso Handicap off a third-place finish in the Grade 1 Forego.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Forever Unbridled wasn’t the only horse who ran well for trainer Dallas Stewart on Travers Day at Saratoga.

About two hours after Forever Unbridled defeated Songbird in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign, Tom’s Ready, sent off at odds of 44-1, finished a solid third in the Grade 1 Forego behind the champion sprinter Drefong.

Tom’s Ready has returned to New York, where on Saturday he will take on the heavily favored Sharp Azteca in the Grade 2, $300,000 Kelso Handicap.

Good Samaritan rerouted to Jockey Club Gold Cup

Debra A. Roma
Good Samaritan, shown winning the Jim Dandy Stakes in July, will skip the Pennsylvania Derby after a fever cost him some training time.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Good Samaritan, the Jim Dandy Stakes winner who finished fifth in the Travers Stakes, is being pointed to the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park on Oct. 7, said Elliott Walden, president and CEO of WinStar Farm, which shares ownership of the 3-year-old.

Good Samaritan was supposed to run in Saturday’s Grade 1, $1 million Pennsylvania Derby at Parx before coming down with a temperature that forced him to miss some training time, Walden said.

Hurricane Irma interrupts Turf Sprint preparation for Pay Any Price

Leslie Martin/Coglianese Photos
Bob Umphrey Sprint Stakes winner Pay Any Price missed about a week of training due to Hurricane Irma.

By the time the Breeders’ Cup comes around, it’s hard to find a horse running at 100 percent.

The wear and tear of a long campaign rarely comes without some time off for a nagging issue or to freshen up from a long trip or dull effort. Missing time due to a hurricane, though, is one box most Breeders’ Cup contenders aren’t able to check.

Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint contender Pay Any Price rode out Hurricane Irma in the barn of trainer Ralph Ziadie at Gulfstream Park West, the former Calder Race Course, in South Florida.

Drefong, Mind Your Biscuits, Imperial Hint will train up to BC Sprint

Ronnie Betor
Forego winner Drefong will train up to a title defense in the Breeders' Cup Sprint.

There are still three Win and You’re In Challenge races to be decided before the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Del Mar on Nov. 4. But barring an unforeseen change of heart from trainers Bob Baffert, Chad Summers or Luis Carvajal Jr., leading contenders Drefong, Mind Your Biscuits, and Imperial Hint will not participate in any of those preps. All three are on schedule to simply train up to the six-furlong Sprint.
